SALEM, OREGON - - FOR ASTORIA ELECTRIC RAILROAD. Mayor Johnson’s Reply and Answer to the Same. Mayor S. S. Johnson, in reply to the communication he received last week in regard to obtaining rights of way for the proposed electric line from Astoria to Tillamook, sent the following letter to Mr. John H. Whyte, manager Chamber of Commerce, Astoria, Ore. : D ear S ir ,—I have just received your communication of the 25th inat. and have referred the same to prominent citizens here. The newspapers will also give the proposition wide advertise ment. I have grave fears that just now is a very unfavorable time to obtain sub scriptions to your project, for the reason that our people -are already tied up with the F. R. & N. Co. on a *20,000 sub scription, which, however, is conditional upon the company's doingcertain things apparently impossible of accomplish ment. We (Astoria and Tillamook) have made grievous error in failing to take up the matter of nn electric road long before this date. The scheme has been feasible for many years and could have been consumated with local capital. One of the conditions of the subscrip tions to the P. R. & N. Co. is that the company construct ten miles of road out of Tillamook to be completed by Feb. 1st next. II this is not done, the subscribers are released, and upon that contingency you would find that our citizens would take eztraordinary interest in the build ing of your proposed road. But until this company has forfeited its subscrip tion contract, you naturally will find our people careful about additional sub scriptions. - Yours very truly, S idney 3. J ohnson . Astoria, Orc., Aug. 3, 1908. Mr. Sidney 8. Johnson, Mayor, Tilla mook, Ore. D ear 3ut,—Replying to yours of July 27th, we cartlolly note the contents of your letter and would say that our sur veying here will won he completed to Seaside, and we have tbe promise of the promoters that they will begin construe- tion almost immediately after the sur veying and right of way are finished. It they are able to make good their plans it would seem they ought to be carrying forward construction work within sixty days at the furthest. I trust that you will carefully watch us and if we begin construction thia fall as outlmed, that you will then do ell you can to hasten forward the survey from Tillamook to Seaside. We are holding our right-of-way in our possesaion for three vyars and d your people will make tbe survey and bold vour rightof way for three (years along with ours. I feel very confident that we will put tbe road all tbe way through. Jf yon were ready to hegia the survey now the same organized force that is doing the work here could cow tinne oo from Elk Creek. I leel personal» ly very confident that we will be aide to construct our electric railroad as planned without any delay. Yuors very truly, J. H. W byts . t W. I. STALEY, Principal. Ashton-Branacombe-Coy. On Monday, August 10th, this clever company will open an engagement of one week, changing the bill nightly, playing only up to date bills such as “Hearts of Gold," “Sapho,’* “The Sheriff,” “David Garrick,” “Tarn of the Dice,“ etc. The company is headed by Miss Lily Branscombe, one of the moat versatile leading ladies now touring Americri. She will be ably suppot ted by Mr. Herbert Ashton, an actor of great ability, and other well known players. They ha ve just closed a special five weeks season in Astoria, thirty weeks in Van couver, and Miss Brantcombe and Mr. Ashton hold the record for ninty six weeks stock in Portland at the Lyric theatre. Every pl«y will be dressed magnificintly and correctly, and the theatre going public of Tillamook will be sure of a dramatic treat which they doubtless will appreciate. Notice.
