Word of Advice to Property

To avoid destruction of
property and the loss of life,
or a repetition of the forest
fires of a few years ago, it
is imperative that more pre

The Two Things
Necessary to Possess a Bank Account
The first, is the Desire or Inclitiaiion.
Every one has a wish for money—it is
human nature, for it takes money to
possess the comforts and necessities of
life.
The second requirement is One Dol-
lar or more. The first deposit need not
be large, and after the first money is
deposited, you have a bank account.
The size of your bank account rests
with you.

FOR ASTORIA ELECTRIC
RAILROAD.
Mayor Johnson’s Reply and
Answer to the Same.
Mayor S. S. Johnson, in reply to the
communication he received last week in
regard to obtaining rights of way for
the proposed electric line from Astoria to
Tillamook, sent the following letter to
Mr. John H. Whyte, manager Chamber
of Commerce, Astoria, Ore. :
D ear S ir ,—I have just received your
communication of the 25th inat. and
have referred the same to prominent
citizens here. The newspapers will also
give the proposition wide advertise
ment.
I have grave fears that just now is a
very unfavorable time to obtain sub
scriptions to your project, for the reason
that our people -are already tied up with
the F. R. & N. Co. on a *20,000 sub
scription, which, however, is conditional
upon the company's doingcertain things
apparently impossible of accomplish
ment.
We (Astoria and Tillamook) have
made grievous error in failing to take
up the matter of nn electric road long
before this date. The scheme has been
feasible for many years and could have
been consumated with local capital.
One of the conditions of the subscrip
tions to the P. R. & N. Co. is that the
company construct ten miles of road out
of Tillamook to be completed by Feb. 1st
next. II this is not done, the subscribers
are released, and upon that contingency
you would find that our citizens would
take eztraordinary interest in the build
ing of your proposed road. But until
this company has forfeited its subscrip
tion contract, you naturally will find
our people careful about additional sub
scriptions.

Yours very truly,

It they are able to make good their

within sixty days at the furthest.
I trust that you will carefully watch
us and if we begin construction thia fall
