Per Case Between Tillamook and Portland. Mr. Carl Ilaberlach, who is secretary and salesman for a dozen of the cheese factories in this county, has succeeded in getting the freight on cheese reduced to a fair rate, as the following letter will prove. It seems that the factories have been taxed 45c. per case of gross weight of 78 pounds, which is now reduced to 24c. For several months the dairy in terests have been complaining, so much so that a number of dairymeu have sig nified their willingness to put up large sums of money for a new boat. Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway Co.. Astoria & Columbia River Rail road Co., Traffic Department. Portland, Ore., Aug 13, 1908. Mr. Carl Halierlach, Tillamook, Ore. Dear Sir,—Referring Co the matter of rates on cheese from Tillamook to Port land and other points, subject of your letters of July 29lh and August 1st. The subject has been very carefully considered aud it has lieen decided to cancel the current rates as shown in tariff A. A C. R. No. 923 and effective August 27th on state shipments and September 27th un interstate shipments, substituting therefor a rate on cheese in packages, any quantity, 80c. per 100 lb , actual weight, froiu Garibaldi, Hobson« ville, Bayw City and Tillamook to Port- land. On the basis of this rate and the average weight named in yours of July 29lh, adding an average of 10 lb. fur the package, will result in a rate of about 21c. (ter ease of " twins' and about 24c. per case of ** triplets," and will, I aui sure, alter being given a fair trial prove more satisfactory to all concerned than any rate per case could possibly be. It does not appeal tuns as being fair that a box of cheese shall be transported for a fixed price regardless of the weight, it having been shown that the net weight of cheese varies to an axtreme of approximately 20 per cent. Ocean carriers often waive considera tions of this character when the measure ment of Uie freight is excessive In oom. parison with the weight, but there is little difference i<> Cue weight and measurement of cheese as shipped from Tillamook, particularly the heavier packages I suggest you arrange, beginning with August 27th, tu allow the exact gross weight of your shipments on shipping receipt* and that you arrange to give this new rate n fair trial. If this is done 1 feel assured that you will agree with me that the new rate is a proper one. Yours truly, H. M. A dams . Notice. Notice is herehv given that bids will he received for the construction of three miles of road on what is called the "Necarney Mountain Road,” beginning at the three mile stake of road survey, or Station 44. 85 8. of the locating sur vey and continuing three miles on said locating survey northerly toward Clat sop County line.
