To make the first week of competition even more excit ing, the Varsity team won the 3A Scappoose Invitational last Saturday! Vernonia was the only 2A team there, along with six 3A teams and one 4A school. The Loggers were very de termined throughout the day. They passed and attacked well and played ferocious de fense. Scappoose Invitational Scores: Pool Play— vs. Wilsonville 15-3,15-2 vs. Stayton 15-9,15-1 vs. Scappoose 15-9,15-8 Bracket Play— vs. Central 15-2,15-8 vs. The Dalles 15-11,15-5 vs. Stayton 11-15,15-6, 15-11 “This was a big tournament win for us,” said Head Coach Dan Foss, “but we know that important league matches are ahead, and we have to keep things in perspective." At Marshall, the Varsity uti lized tough serving, relentless defense and aggressive hit tin g to dow n th e M inute- maids, 15-7,15-6. Stacy Ochoa and Jennifer Young each had seven kills w hile M olly S kidm ore and Michelle Busch contributed fo u r aces each. C aptain Tarah Pond ran the offense, had nine assists and added five kills. Varsity team members are Michelle Busch, Amber Den nis, S tacy O choa, Tarah Pond, Brandy Richardson, Molly Skidmore, Denise Titus, J e n n ife r Young and Tory Young. JVI team gains experience, wins Vernonia High School JVI volle yba ll is off to another great year with a victorious first match, 13-15, 15-6, 15-7, at Portland’s Marshall High School. Seniors Brandy Morrison, Ronda B aker and Ju n io rs Charlotte Koch and Amanda Dennis are all returnees from last year’s team. Throughout the season we w ill w ork on le a rn in g the game, and sharpening skills.” The fourteen team mem bers are already finding their s p e c ia lty p o s itio n s . Young bicycle riders are asked to wear their helmets and bring their bikes to Wash ington Grade School Septem ber 30 for a Bicycle Safety Rodeo. The Bicycle Safety Rodeo is sponsored by the Oregon State Police Law E nforce m ent E xp lo re r S couts of Columbia County, with sup port from the Oregon State Police, Scappoose office, and the Vernonia Police Depart ment. It will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the back parking lot of WGS. The event will include in formation on bicycle safety, what the new laws are re garding bicycles and free bi cycle registration Courses will be set up to practice bicy cle safety skills.
