But, before She had picked up his bags, he ?was approached by a pert young iwoman dressed In a colorful Ha waiian holoku who asked him in ;iis own language if she could be f assistance. That scene, repeated many ; times daily, is part of Hawaii's new Visitor Satisfaction Program, which has virtually erased the language barrier for foreign trav elers arriving In the islands. ". The program, unique in the - United States, was started to add some of the warmth and aloha Spirit of Hawaii to an otherwise Smpersond terminal building. tt operates under the watchful 'est of energetic Bert Thomas, whose credentials include nine years' experience In the travel and tourist promotion business, Thomas has drawn on Hawaii's multi-racial population for S8 girls - who, among them, speak nine tor ; elgn languages Japanese, Chi- nese, French, Spanish, Korean, I German. Portuguese, Filipino and Thai. Six of the girls work at airports on othe rislands of Ha- wail end the other 20 cover Hono lulu Airport around the clock. ; The girls, with a tour guide's knowledge of Hawaii, meet every plane and offer their assistance to aU passengers, Americans as well as foreigners. He started out shortly ; after World War I by taking a correspondence course. While taking the course, he was struck from behind by an auto. ' His hearing was permanently '. damaged, but bis eyes took up the ', slack. After finishing the course, he was assigned to the identification bureau of the Galveston Police , Department and soon became ; known as "Eagle Eye." In his 44 years w ith the depart ' ment. Bock also uved several ' innocent persons. He oice got II I boys released In connection with a J filling station robbery. He received a letter oi com. mendation from FBI Chief J. Ed jar Hoover for that case. Although Bock is retired, his family still Is represented in the fight ajainst crime.
