signs and sounds at the sprawling
new terminal building were both

She had picked up his bags, he
?was approached by a pert young
iwoman dressed In a colorful Ha
waiian holoku who asked him in
;iis own language if she could be
f assistance.
That scene, repeated many
; times daily, is part of Hawaii's
new Visitor Satisfaction Program,
which has virtually erased the
language barrier for foreign trav
elers arriving In the islands.
". The program, unique in the
- United States, was started to add
some of the warmth and aloha
Spirit of Hawaii to an otherwise
Smpersond terminal building.

whose credentials include nine
years' experience In the travel
and tourist promotion business,
Thomas has drawn on Hawaii's
multi-racial population for S8 girls
- who, among them, speak nine tor

Thai. Six of the girls work at
airports on othe rislands of Ha-
wail end the other 20 cover Hono

; The girls, with a tour guide's
knowledge of Hawaii, meet every
plane and offer their assistance
to aU passengers, Americans as
well as foreigners. But It is the
foreign visitor with little or no
. knowledge of English who finds
: their services mcst helpful.
' The questions asked the girls
are many and varied, ranging
'.; from Information on currency ex
change to where to have a pair
of trousers pressed at night.
: Thomas operates on a budget of
$175,000 a year. The funds come
from money paid to the state by
; concessionaires at airports. This
has been supplemented by an as-
sist from local firms.

' back with a card of prints taken
' from the man 20 years before.
On another occasion, a burglary
; suspect was being questioned. A

; at his hands.
After a close look, Bock came
bark in a few minutes with the
' man's file. He rattled off the
: man's record and It was discov
'. ered ho was wanted in several
: other cities. Bock had never seen
; the man before, Just his prints.
; Bock Is considered a pioneer In
1 (ho rare profession of fingerprint
; experts. He started out shortly
; after World War I by taking a
correspondence course.
While taking the course, he was
struck from behind by an auto.
' His hearing was permanently
'. damaged, but bis eyes took up the
', slack.
After finishing the course, he
was assigned to the identification
bureau of the Galveston Police
, Department and soon became
; known as "Eagle Eye."
In his 44 years w ith the depart
' ment. Bock also uved several
' innocent persons. He oice got II
I boys released In connection with a
J filling station robbery. Another
time a man had been positively

- by his likeness to the wanted man.

' checking the fingerprints of the

! found in Galveston Bay in an
advanced state of decay.

his print from the fifth layer of

Although Bock is retired, his
family still Is represented in the
