Debate on Atolls A corps of cientlata, Incluif lull Cmdr. Itouer Iluvcllo of tho Hcrippa Oceiinouriiphlc inatltti lion of l.a Jollu, Calif., and Dr. Ituliih Sawyer of thu University of Nllchluau, hope that atudlea niiule In connection with the liomh testa will aettla delude over the alructuro of atolls whether they lire coral enpa to old volcanic cones or lire built up on a slowly aulialdlng hum- of rock tiplhrunt from the sen bot tom. Ohservatlons ut lllklnl by the aurvey ship tlowdltch show this utoll la a ahallow saucer, not more than Mill feet deep ut any Point, fringed with small la lunda and a chain of corul reefs lind aand rnpa. The outer edm of tho utoll ends In an abrupt drop Into about 000 feet of water, a submarine precipice. Then the wull of the atoll awtlcs outward at about 4S decrees, contlnuInK downward until a depth of approximately 12.0(11) feet of water la found at five miles offshore. Hnvello thinks the under water bomb blusts may shake uwuy corul at tho tip of tho atoll in small lundslldca extend ing perhaps I0 feet alonK the edue. This prospect is nuide more likely by the fact that this section of the pacific la free of earthquakes which elsewhere In the world tend to settle rock masses and formations. May XIII Coral The bombs may make a dead reef of the now HvInK coral atoll of bikini. The scientists think It possible that radio activity, contaminating the water In and outside the luuoon. can kill tlie animals and plant iirguniam and thus destroy the life cycle that builds tin the reef; At Bikini have been dlacov ered several new or rare ma rine plants, nmonK them a itreen wuter plant culled tydemnnnla. Dr. W. H. Taylor, University of Mlchiiian botanist, said the plant had been aeen only on one previous occasion in the Dutch East Indies at about tho turn of the century. Scientists report that an Important clement In the structure of the reef Is a rock-like water plant, lllho thamnlon, which calcifies aa it grows and becomes part of the coral formation. Dr. Schuitz does aome of his census-taking through use of a paralysing vegetable poisoning. II poura aome In Ihe wuter, the fish aettle to the bottom in a dazed condition and the doctor goea down with a diving mask to look them over . It sounds eaay until one looks at the pounding waves that surge in over the knife-edge coral where the fisheries experts wade and dive. f '- T U..,.,(..t- --j'' II Ut Z. ! . " I . i-jljKii sa ". .. J he fire department is dunning to install three of the chemical extinguishers on trucks with permission of the city council. Although the new chemical has been on the market for sev crul years, it has not been used by the fire department because of the war. Dugas is a white powder com posed of magncsium-aterate and common baking soda. It acta as a smothering agent when sprayed on an oil fire and extinguishes it in a few seconds. One of the features of the chemical la that it will not mix with water, and once a fire ia put out, it remains out. KSBAI D Nr.WS, Klamath rails, Oca. Tl SSDAT. Jlaa U, IMS, fat St HELP.
