The Huml Kiver Fruit Pair ( From The Oregon Agriculturist. ) Hood Kiver has made another splen did demonstration of the euterprise, ability aud skill of its people and of the natural adaptability to tbe pro dilution of upplee of tbe highest qual ity and gieatest beauty. As every cue of Hood Klver's apple shows is best, it is luird tc explain how one is better thmi auotber, but the oue just held showed mote apples and more good apples than any of its remark able predecessors. Many of tbe visit crs elm uot think tbat on tbe aver age tbe work of packing was quite up to that achieved at the last fair two yeirs ago Probably tbey weie right. I'erhitps tbey were more criti cal ttmu 1 boy were two years ago. If it was true that tho packing was not quite equal thicnghout to that of two years ago there was ample excuse. The show oame just at the time when the growers were busiest in picking the crop of apples 11 involved seri ous sacrifice to stop at snob a time and select a dozen boxes of Bbow a plea and then carefully aud skillfully pack them. The amount ot work In volved in doing this Is far greater thau the average person bas any con ception. It is raid tbat it required the service of three skilled tneu for two days to select aud pack one ex hibit of 10 er 12 boxes of apples shown th's your. Ibis exhibit was so packed as to butidfy in its appearance the severest critic. What couuted for even more was when the judgp found it necessary to unpack competitive exhibits for the purpose of ascertain ing the best, the boxes iu the lot just mentioned were fouud to be perfectly packed to the bottom with apples eqiinl in merit to those on the surface. Die general elfeot ot the grnat dis play of apples was most Impressive. Nearly KK) people went from Portland iu one day aud paid a dollai and a hull each iu railroad faro to see the show aud ou tbe traiu returning uot a peison could be found who was uot enthusiastic. Tbey all felt satisfied tbat the spectacle was worth far more thin it cost them in time aud money. This show aud every soon show bas a double educatioual effect. It raises tho ftiindard of tbe orcbardists and it alo raises the staudard of consum ers The first aud most obvious ell eel upon tbe visitors from Port laud, for instance, was t make tbem want to buy such apples as tbey saw at Hood Kiver. Tbe supply of tbe strictly fancy ppplcs produced at ilood Kiver has not yet increased fast ei than the demaud. Tbe time will eomo, however, wben it will be fouud a decidedly profitable undertaking to make iu Kastern cities exhibits cf a caiload or so . It would immediately jouviiue a large number of prrsous that they wai ted such apple eud oculd alford to pay fancy (rices to obtain them, 'ilio direct eflet of the Ilood Kiver show iu increasing tho demand in Portlmd for 'smy Hpjles of itseif nn re Ibuu j.is-UMtS the he'd iug ot the show The nrnsami titn i.f faucy apples iu every Cty and town in Oregon cau be increased by showing tho people snob apples. THE LIGHT (EX WATER CO. duce apples "just as good as tbose grown at Hood Kiver" should learn what Hood Kiver apples are like a"d the methods used in producing, ad vertising and marketing tbem. If it is possible for other places to uake displays of apples equal to those made at tbe Hood Kiver fairs they ought to do so. Tho growers of no locality can say In reply to this that they do ti.it ueed to do so. for there is no othei locality which obtains as bigb average prices for its apples as Hood Kiver. The quality aud beauty ol tbe Hood Kiver apples were essen tial to the success they have acbiev ed, but advertising aud methods of marketing have been also essential fac tors in placing tbe prices of their apples at tbe bead of tbe list. Tbe oliroatio conditions at Ilood Rivet are especially favorable to tbe production of tbe choicest apples, but the human element bas co inted for more than climate iu bringing about the great success wbicb bas been aobieved there. Tbe community was fortunate iu having 00 tbe start men who steadily kept in view tbe import ance rf producing the best and wbo have persisteutly done all iu their power to make it the object of tbe whole community to produce only tbe best varieties of aoules and toanr'dv to tbe pioductiou and marketing of these the best methods wbicb cau Le learn - ed. Tbe men who have produced the apples which hate made Hood River famous and added luster to Oregon's horticultural reputation have been notable for their eagerness to learn everything which might bo useful to tbem in their business. At the start but lew of tbem were college men, but tbe steadily developiug intelli gence of tbe commuuity bas made it so attractive to educated persons tbat Hood Kiver enjoys the unique posi tion of having a strong University Club witb nearly a hundred members, most of whom are lruit growers. No other community in Oregon should begrudge Hood Kiver tbe large amount of apparently free advertising it obtaius by the holding of tbes applo shows. If, as it seems, every body is now ready aud willing to aid iu spreading tbe fame- ot the Hood Kiver apple It is a case whiob cou firms tbe old saying, "the Lord helps those who help themselves." It bas taken a great deal more than common biag giug to give tbe Ilood Kiver apple tbe much envied reputation it uow possesses. It is much better for other fun, growing communities to emulate Hood River's example tbau to com plain of the great public wbiob fails to recognize the value of au article it bas never beard of.
