Steele HOOD ItlVKIt, OREGON TAFT-SHERMAN RALLY BIG ONE FULTON MAKES STRONG ADDRESS J. L. Ctrte r aud S, ii. Tate Also Speak on Lead In I? Issni of Campaign to Knthiislavtlc Andlrnre. Under the auspices of tbe Hood River Taft and Sherman club Senator Cbas. W. Fulton ppoke to a larRe au dienoe in the opera bouse Wednesday evening. Tbe addrei ot Mr. Fulton was a strong, logical and loroeful one based on policies that originated and have been put in sooessful operation by the rephlioarj party, and which, be proved by oonvioing aiguments, have been largely resposlble for toe pros perity of tbe oountiy. I be meeting opened at a o ciock and was presided over by J. L. Carter, pre-tident of tbe Tatt and Snerman club, aud republioan member of tbe state legislature from this district. Mr. Carter made a short address aud tben, in a few well chosen words, in troduced J. U. Tate, a well known lo. osl speaker who formerly lived in Mr. Uryan a home town, Lincoln, Nebras ka In his opening remarks Mr. Tate called attention to the beneflclent in fluences of a protective lurltf in tbe United States saying tbat bo was born in the manufacturing districts of Kugland and tbht previous to tlio time tbat tbe tariff was put into elfeot on steel rails that the great plants nianu faouring them the.re employed thous ands of men at good wages and sold their product to this country at a hint) figure. After the protectee thr ift was put into ettect aud the manu facture of this product whs com menced in this country many oi the lactones in England were compelled to close, and wages went down, and bad remained so. Tbe tarilf he argued was one ot the greatest blessings to tbe working man in this country tbat bad evei been put into elfeot. lu le gal d to, Mr. L'ry ail's aspiiaicnsto be president tbe speaker said tbat be bad lived for several years within a few blocks of the talkative democratic leadei and knew him personally very well. That in rogard to Mr. Liryau as a man be bad nottiing to say. lie belived bim to be morally a good mail aud knew bim to be a good neighbor, but as a oa nil date for tbe greatest ottice lu the gift ot tbe peope be was impossiplo. He was a poser in tbe limelight seeking tbe plaudits of the multitude. In tbe tbree campaigns in which be bad essayed to lead tbe people to a new land of poltloal prom ise tbe issues tbat he bad promulgated and espoused were dangerous, im practicable, skin deep in their wis doro and flung brcadoast ovei tbe land to oatcb tbe vote of the unthinking and discontentd. Ilia vacllatina course in hopping from one perch to another in bis vain endeavor to strike an issue tbat would oatob enough of the popular vote to land bim tbe pres identtal chair was both ridioulous and pathelio. In this respect tbe speaker said he bad obbserved tbat bis last stand In t tie three times that be bas essayed to be president was al ways to declare tbat a great corrup tion fund was being rained to buy the vote of the American people away from bim. Tbe announcement from tbe veteran presidential campaigner bad been delayed a little longer tbia time, tbat in previous years, but as be bad eApectod, it came a few days ago. lie iienevea a statement ot inis kind on tbe part or Mr. bryan oi any one else was au Insult to the 1 tell l genae and honesty of the American voter and implied that it votes were bought they must'be deaiooratio votes as Mr. liryau was not a oadidate on tbe republioan ticket. In conclusion the speaker snid be didn't think tbat tbe American people were going to elect a man to tbe presidency they bad twice repudiated for bis danger ous policies aud instability and pre dicted an overwhelming victory lor Taft. The introduction of Senator Fulton, wbo i-i not a stranger to Hood Kiver audiences, called forth a round of bearty applause. It is about two years since Oiegon's senior member of tbe United States senate has spoken bere aud bis address was listened to with rapt atti ntion. lie prefaced his ad dress with an apology for talking poli tics by telling tbe story of a tramp wbo bad a man arrested for assaulting bim. When the judge asked the pris oner what be had to say in mitigation for bis oonduot tbe latter stated tbat tbe tramp came to bis borne and asked for something to eat aud tbat bis wife bad given bim the best tbe bouse attordod, iuoluding tried chicken and other delicacies. Alter it was put be fore him the tramp looked it over and soathingly Inquired if tbat was the best tbey could do. The piisoner stat ed that be didn't say anything in re ply to this as ho didn't want to have any tiouble. After he bail dovoured everything In sight the unbidden guest Insulted tbe prisoner's wife, lie let this go also as lie didn't want to have any trouble. The stranger then reached in bis pocket, drew out a filthy pipe, loaded it with strong to- baooo aud put bis feet up on the, able dirtying the snow white linen tbat oovered It. Still be didn't say any thing as he didn't waut to have trouble. "Finally, however, judge," said tbe prisoner, "ho oommeuoed to talk polltcs aud I got a club and knocked him down." "Well I don't blame you," replied tbe judge, "You're discharged." The speaker said be wouldn't blame the audience for net wantlng'to listen to too much politios, but be felt tbat there were some very important 1 1-sues In tbe present campaign tbat tbey ought to bear discussed. In au able manner he went buck to tbe llrst prin ciples of republicanism and democra oy taking as tbe originators and lead ers of tbe two great parties Hamilton and Jefferson. To tbe formei be said oould be tiaced the great development of tbe United States, fostered by tbe policies of the republioan party due to tbe staud be took tbat tbe coustl tutlou of tbe United States provided tor au implication of powers not spe clUually stated in it. To thin implied power as enniiiiciHted by Hamilton aud opposed by Jefferson weie largely due nil the gieat publio works and many of tbe laws enacted by tbe re publican party wbicb bad proved to be tbe life, bone and sinew of tbe nation. It was on this account the seotor said tbat tbe policies of the republic an party were more in touch with tbe great Deeds of tbe penplu and tbat tbelr continuation wae so essential. In tbe enactment of legislation tc control tbe trusts be slated tbat every line tbat was on the statute books was placed theie under republioan admin istration, lu this connection be cit ed the case of tbe Northern Securities Company which had been dissolved and restrained from doing business by tbe United States Supieme Court, every judge of which, who voted to sustain the order to abolish this cor poration was a republican and every judge wbo voted against it was a dem ocrat. This, said Fulton, was in ao- oordanoe with tbe broad view of Ham ilton, and tbe interpretation of tbe implied tower in the constitution of the United States as construed by the republican party. "And," tbe speak er added, "this alone is estimated to ssve tbe shippers of tbe United States 1150,000,001) annually." Touching ou tbe tarilf, Mi. fulton said tbat there was no question as to the wisdom of tbe protective tariff wbon it was put into eSect and ot its great beneliti now. It was realized tbat there weie some items on it that posslbily needed adjusting and there was no doubt that it would be revised so as to conform to tbe best Intel ter cets ot tbe people. lie said however tbat notwithstanding tbe fact tbat there bad beeu a democratic adminis tration since the orlgnal protective tarilt was put into etlecl, no radical attempt was made by the democrats to alter the provisions of it. Tbe goverment by injuuotlon plank inserted in the democratic platform tbe speaker said was without signifi cance. Ouriug tbe past four years there bad beeu only 300 Injuctlous Issued ky the federal courts in all parts of the Unted States and only tweuty of these bad been granted against labor aud then only when it was actually necessary to protect life and property. "I am not bere to abuse any other party or the theories of any otber party," continued the speaker "1 douut not we are all workng for the best interests of our oountry. I am not bere to abuse Mr. Biyan. No doubt be Is a good niau, but it la not a good man only wbo makes the best otllclal. 1 do not believe Mr. liryau Is in any way connected with the Standard Oil Company, altbougb it was said his treasurer, Mr. llaskoll. was found uncomfortably close to it. but let us be fair, 1 do not think he bas auy connection or sympathy with that corpoiation. Hut 1 do think he knows lees about government affairs than anyone else lu this oountry. "Mr. liryau ooutonds that there publican paity bas tostored trusts by its polioles and is their friend. Yet Mr. liryau knows tbat every Jaw on tbe statute books aimed ut the trusts was placed there by tbe republican party, r irst came tbe Sherman law, tbat attacked the trusts, but there was a question whether or not it waa val id beoause the constitution of tbe United States did not state expressly that tbe government had power to regulate trusts. To give the govern ouent undoubted power to regulate trusts, it was proposed to amend the constitution, but all the democratic members of aongress. save only live, voted against the amendment and tbe required two-thirds vote was lost, "Tbe democrats wbo votd against the amendment of tbe constitution were probably not under tbe influence of tbe trusts but they adhered to their party principles, holding tbat such an amendment tended to a strong ceo traltzed government and opposed it on tbat ground, lint tbe republicans still believed tbe Sherman low valid and have always enforoed it while tbe democrats have always done their best to oppose its ontorcement. "People will tell you tbat no mat ter what paity is in power, we will have good times or bad times anyway. Most of you bere remember 1892 when the oountiy was going along on the high tide of prosperity. Tbe repub lioane told tbe people what would happen if there was a change In tbe poiioies of government. We all know tbe resulting conditions, how mills were olosed. wheels of industi y stopped and a goneral stagnation ot business followed. This was not for one year but tor four aud how long those four years seemed 1 "In law Mr. Bryan came in and propsed to put an end to the prevalent bard times with his rree-siiver rem edv. liut with tbe return of tbe re publicans to powei, tbe hum of in dustry was resumed as prosperity smiled once more. Tbe next election brought up Mr. liryan with bis rem edy of anti-lmperiallsm. Do you think Hryau was honest iu this rem edy? 1 do not. 1 do not think be believed tbe retention ot tbe Flump pins was greatei than the question of whether we Bhould maintain a sound currency, i believe Air. uryun a is covered he oould not get in the White House cu tbe free-silver issue and be thought bo could on autl-imperlalism 1 do not believe Mr. liryan is a man of honest and sincere convictions. lie lacks mental Integrity. It gladdened tbe bearts of tbe democratic boats to see Mr. Ilrya wined and feted ou bis tour aroun tbe world. Tbey said ho had gotte broader and was tben pepared to be tbe Moses to lead the democrat! party out of tbe wildurnbss. When be returned to JNew i ork, it was giv en out tbat be would make a speech sounding the keyuote ot bis 11)08 cam peign. He did make a spoeob, and be carefully wrote it out and lead it. caieful to make no mistakes. Whit was tbe paramount issue tben? it froe silver or anti-imperialism? N it was tbe government ownership railroads. of "Tbe next morning a storm of pro tests went up, particularly from tbe South, where tbey are still wedded state rights and tbey saw in this pol ioy a further move toward a strong centralized government, which waa n tbe idea of Jefferson. "Tben liryan expressed himself not so very strongly favoring govern meut ownership of railroads. He tbat issue go, too, beoause it was u popular. He is without deep oonvio tion in anything. He lacks tbut sential tor tbe great leader and states man, mental lutegny. "Now Hryau wants the government guarantee ot bank deposits. He says be Is tbe friend ot tbe laboring man, and would do away with tbe issuance of Injunctions and provide for jury trials in oases of workmen in con tempt of court. This preposition (Continued on Page 8.) BIG REPULICAN VOTE REGISTERED PRESAGES 700 MAJORITY FOR TAFT County Develops Toting Strength of 1600 and Indicates a Papulation of 9,000 People. Tbe total registration In liood Kiv- county as lecelved by County Clerk 1). Culbertson shows tbe total vote registered to be 1588, with sever- distriots to bear from tbat have not as yet made a complete returns. It expected that wben these are in tbe grand total will foot np something over 1600. Aooordlng to tbe declara tion of tbe voters wbo registered 1009 of them Bre republicans; 299 demo crats; 101 lndpendenta;58 prohibition ists; VI socialists and 8J reluse to state their politioal preference. Assuming tbat all tbe voters wbo have registered aa republioana will vote for Taft be should have a major ity over liryan iu tbe county of 710 votes. It Is very probable tbia will increased by a number of votes from tbe independents and those who efused to deolaie themselves. In fact is safe to assume that if tbe vote is as large as tbe reglstiation tbat tbe republican standard bearer will re- . ceive In Hood River county a major ity over liryan approximating 700. It estimated tbat from 5 to 10 per cent of tbe vote of ia not registered and any loss tbat may result from those wbo are registered and fall to vote is expected to be more than made up by the voters wbo qualify on elec tion day by swearing in their votes. It is Interesting In tbls connection to note that figuring by tbe uual es timate ot one voter to five residents, the population uf tbe county la over 000 people. (j,0U0 ot whloh ara resi dents of West, East, Center and Booth Hood Kiver preclnoti. Making a con servative estimate tbat Ave per cent of tbe voters aro not registered, on tbe assumption that tbe list will con - tain 1000 names wben complete there are au additional 80 voters in the ouoty and also an additional popu lation of 400 which added to tbe 8000 already given gives Uj,e total popula tion of tbe newly created county olose to 9,000 people. Aooordlng to the estimate of one voter to Ave resi dents tbe registration shows a popula tion in lialdwln preclnot of 615; Odell 530 and Falls 565. The registration bows tbat there are no professed pro hibitionists or socialists in Falls pre cinct, and no socialists In Odell, As a matter ot fact tbere are more people in all ot tbe peoincts of the county, than have been given In these estimates as tbey do not in clude non-voters and tbe floating population. NEW BRICK BLOCKS FOR OAK STREET Hood Kiver residents will be intei- ested in knowing tbat the city is to have tbree handsome new business blocks in addition to those which are already being built and tbat work will be commenced on them immediately. Tbe buildings in question will be built on Oak street adjoining tbe new Eliot building and will be erected by S. L. Young, Sherman Frank and the Fashion Static. Plana tor tbem, which were, deolded on at a meeting of the property owners last Saturday, provide that tbey shall be of the same tyle ot aronueotore as the uuot ouia ng with tbe same colored brick and wo stories bigb. When ioompietea the tbree buildings will oooupy a space of 150x100 feet and will make a solid brick blook extending from First to Seoond street. The building next to tbe Eliot blook will be erected by S. L. Young and work will be oomuienoed on it imme diately. It la expected to bave it completed by tbe first ot the year and it will be occupied by O. D. Nickelsen witb au up-to-date play house, on tbe ground floor and Carl Ross will have a double bowling alley In tbe basement. Tbe building which Mr. Frank will erect will be occupied by the harness business conducted by Ueo. i. Irvine witb office rooms above and the Fash ion Stable people will use their bond ing for their big livery business which will be fitted up In every way to give them a modern stable in every partic ular. Work on the latter two build inga will be commenced In tbe spring.
