Steele HOOD KIVER, OREGON GREAT VICTORY FOR REPUBLICANS TAFT SWEEPS STATE AND NATION Conntj (ilves Him 40H Majority Urer Rryan and is lint to Send Com plete Returns. Eleotlon returns received bere by wire and through the Oregon tan show that laft baa swept tbe country and carried tbe state by 25,000. In tbe county be got 408 majority over Bry an with a vote that was about 300 eboit of the registration. Hood Riv er county was tbe first to send com plete returns to tbe Kepublioao state headquarters and also to tbe Portland daily papers. Election day throughout tbe coun ty was a quiet one. 1'be greatest fall ing olf in any of tbe precincts watt In the East Side precinct where tbe vote was 100 lest than tbe legisla tion. Tbis is accounted for to tome extent by teb fact that the contractor for repairing tbe approaches tu tbe uew bridge tailed to get them done in time for voters from there to con veulently oast tbeir ballots. In otber sections of tbe county tbe vote cast was about 75 per cent of tbe registration. The county vote Is as follows: Taft and Sbermns West Hood Kiver East Hood Kiver Center Hood Kiver South Hood Kiver Odell Baldwin Precinct Falls Preolnct 160 i:u 159 JO X., Total Bryan and Kern West Hood Kiver East Ilood Kiver Centei Hood Kiver South Hood Kiver Odell Baldwin Preeinot Falls Precinct Total CbaQn and Watkius West Hood Kiver East Hood Kiver Center Hood Kiver South Hood Kiver Odell Baldwin Precinct Falls Preeinot Tot-1 Debs and Iianford West Hood Kiver East Hood Kiver Center Hood Kiver South Hood Kiver Odell Baldwin Preoinct Falls Preoict Total H'sgen and Craves West Hood Kiver East Hood Kiver Center llord Kiver South Hood River Odell Baldwin Precinct Falls Precinct Total Tart Biyan Taft over Kryau Registration Total Vote 708 C7 01 103 33 31 31 31 300 10 10 15 10 4 0 4 5!) 768 300 408 1542 1237 Less than registration .'105 In regard to tbe election through out the United States tbe Oregonian says: Election returns from throughout the United States received up to an early hour this morning show the fol (owing results: William II. Taft, ot Ohio, has beeu elected President with 295 votes se cure and 28 doubtful. Practioally do change is indicated in tbe complexion of tbe National House of Representatives. The United States Senate will retain Uh present Republican majority. Governor Hughes nas been re-elect ed in New York state by about 76,000 plurality. Indiana bas gone lor J. art by irom 15,000 to 18,000 plurality. Bryan "apparently has carried Ne braska, although tbe Republicans still claim tbe state. Ohio returns bave been seriously delayed owing to the immense size of the ballot, but latt has oairied tbe state by a majority ranging from 5U,- 000 to 75,000. HOOD RIVER SPRAY M Taft carried Jiew Vork City by about 11,000 plurality, tbis being tbe first time tbe city baa given its vote to a Republican Presidential candi date since 181X3, when McKiuley bad a small plurality. Taft received a greater plurality in New York State than lioosevelt did four years ago. Tbe adicationa point to 202,000 (or left as against 175,000 for Koosevelt. Hisgen, tbe Independence party candidate for President, received about 28,000 votes In Greater New York. Tbe indications are that Democratic Governors bave been elected in sevei al of tbe Middle Western states that bave given tbeir presidential vote for Taft. Taft exoeeded Roosevelt's plurality tn New Jersey and Massaohustets, as well ai in New York. The Republican plurality fell off heavily In tbe Middle West in a man ner thoroughly surprising to tbe Re publican managers. Speaker Cannon has been re-eletoed by bis usua majority. Representa tive Payne, of New York, and Repre sentative Dalzell, of Pennsylvania, have beeu ie-elected and tbe house of Representatives will probably con tinue under ita old regime. Mr. Payne will bave charge of the ne tar ift bill in tbe extra session which Mr. latt will call Immediately after Maiob 4, next. Missouri baa returuedto the "Solid South" on tbe presidential ticket and elected Cowherd, Democrat, aa its governor. In tbe state Taft win Oregona's four eleotoial votes by between 24.000 and 25,000 aooording to incomplete returns from 33 counties and complete returns from Hood River county. He ranging from 100 in Baker .to 8000 in Multnomah. Tba state vote stands near 05,000 for Taft and 40,000 tor Bryan, lu tbe presidential election four years ago, Oregon gave Roosevelt 42,934 plurality, tbe vote for Koose velt being 00,455 and for Parker, 17, 521. ' Socialists, Prohibitionists and Independents palled yesterday per haps 10,000 votes in the state. The whole vote was close to 115,000. The registration prior to tbe election was 133,178, of which 80,390 was Republi can and 32,263 was Democratio. To oast Oiegon'a four rotes for Taft tbe state has chosen the Republican candidates tor presidential electors R. K. Butler, ot Uilliam county; J. 1). Lee, ot Multnomah; A. 0. Mars ters, of Douglao, and Frauk J. Miller, of Liun. Closest of the counties Is Baker, which taft carries by about 100 votes. In that county DeniooraU mads tbeir st longest campalyu and thought it secure for Bryan. Other ocuntiel that disappoint them are Linn, which goes for Talt by between 350 and 400, and Jaokaon by 400. Outside Multnomah, raft's lead is 10,000, his strongest counties being Marion, 1400 plurality; Lane, 1300; Wasnlugton, 120U; Uuiatiilu, between 850 and 1000, and Douglas, 1000. In Portland Taft's vote is not quiet 2 to 1. On tbe west side bis vote more than doubles Bryan's, but on the east side bis gait was a little bet ter than l'a to 1. Dry it n carries only two Multuomab preomots 74 and 75 in Alhina, where are many longshore men "otes. Taft's 24,000 or 25,000 plurality is a big surpiise to tbe betting fraternity. Mauy wagers were made that tbe Re publican lead would not exceed 15,000. SUBSCRIBERS TO ROAD FUND WILL MEET A moetlng of tbe subscribers to tbe fund for the new road wbloh will be built from the city for four or five miles out tbe west side will be held In the Commercial Club Rooms, Sat urday afternoon, at 2 o'olock, aod'all subscribers aud others wbo are Inter ested are asked to be present. Mr, Leslie Butlet has consented to pre side at tbe meeting aud tbo object of it is to vote on a plan for construct ing tbe road. If this oau be decided it is expected to start work on it im mediately. Real Estate Transfers Real estate transfers reported by J. II. Heilbronner & Co. during tbe past week are aa follows: T'bos. DAILY Hill Manufacture Magara Lime and Sulphur and Is Important Addition to Hood RlTer s Industrie. . Hood River will soon have new industry in operaton that will repre sent approximately an investment of 25,000. The new enterprise is the lime and sulphur spray manufacturing plant of tbe Hood River Spray Man ufacturing Co., and is situated , on a spur ot the Mt. Hood Railroad a short distance north ot tbe electrio light power bouse. Tbe plant is one of sev eral which is owned by the stockhold ers of tbe company at Hood River, tbe Medford Spray Manufacturing Company aud the Oregon Gas and Spray Company of Portland. Tbe lime and sulphur solution which will be manufactured is that made from the formula of the Oregon Gas and Spray Company, known as the Niag ara Lime and Sulphur Spray, and which has given such good results here aud wherever it has been used. In fact lime and sulphur is becoming recognized ss probably tbe most im portant and effective solution for spraying tiuit trees for most of the diseases with which they become art ec ted and in many p luces it has been adopted as a summer aa well as a winter spray. The new plant at Ilood River when oompleted will be the largest in tbe Northwest aud will have a manufac turing capacity of one oarload dally, the latter consisting of eighty 50 gal lon barrels. Tbe big steel cooking tank will hold 8,000 gallons of tbe mixture while it la being compounded and iu addition there are two im mense wooden receiving tanks with a capaoity of 8,000 gallons each, giving a storage capaoity or iu,wu gallons or the Quished product. It is from these that the lime aud sulphur solution ia barrelled and sent on its way to help insure to the orohardist healthy trees and a crop ot apples that will be free from scab and fungus. In tbe ereotion of; the Hood River plant tbe stockholders of tbe uew en terprise have not spared money or time in securing conditions that will produce the fceBt results. While the building and apparatus has cost many thousands of dollars they have in ad dition spent many more in experi ments, in obtaining tbe advice ot ex perts in chemistry and in insuring oonditlons that will produce the max imum result iu every particular while the solution is being made and also when it is leady for use and finally turned over to the fruit grower for application. -Including the loading platforms aud other structures uecessary tbe new establishment ocoupios spaoe 120x70 feet. In the furnaoe room an Immense boiler of 70 horsepower fur nishes the heavy steam pressure nec essary to thoroughly cook the spray and furnish power for the engine which operates the agitator, a ma chine for stirring the solution while It is being fused in the cooking tank. Ibe engine also operates three pumps and a large elevator whioh runs from tbe top floor to the loading plat form. Water for the enormous amount of solution whioh the plant can manu facture daily is furnished from an ar tesian well sunk below tbe level of tbe Ilood liver nearby and is filtered through a thick deposit of sand before it is pumped iuto tbe 5,000 gallon water tank elevated ao as to furnish a gravity system to all parts ot the building. Tbe connections are of the latest and most approved type, qulok acting valves being supplied and ao intricate aytem ot pumps are airanged ao that the contents ot any of tbe tanks can be drawn from one to another as tbe exigenoiea of tbe work of handling the outptut may re quire. On tbe top floor are to be found tbe lime and sulphur mixing machines run at a high rate of speed. In these the compound is thoroughly amalgamated before it is placed in the oooking tank, the top of whioh ia on a level with tbe floor. In case ot a breakdown of the engine or pumps an arrangement has also been made for syphoning tbe supply of water to tbe various parts of the ap paratus. The new plant has convenient ship ping facilities both locally and long distance. Over tbe Mt. Hood railroad it can ship its products by tbe oar load iuto the east side apple growing district where It can easily be distrib uted by short hauls. Tbe newly de- ( Continued on Page 8.) K
