Tbe exterior of tbe building is fin ished oft in red brick with gray trim mings. The steps are painted in this oolor and frieze which egxtends round the top of tbe stiuoture has on it tbe names of classical characters. On tbe east wiug are those of Aristotle and viigil, ou the front U ruin us, Grac chus, aud Homer, and ou tbe west mug, Agnppa uud fvapiei. The arch itecture of tbe structure which was planned by P. M. Hall-Lewis is plain aud impressive, the front view partic ularly giving the impiessiou of a Bub- BtautiHl utilitarian structure adapted to the uses for whioh it was erected without any gingerbread or spectacu lar oruHiueutatiou. We see flue res idences and some beautiful flowers, but so lar as I could learn Hood Kiver laoks adequate park preserves and their great apple show, while well located, was held upon private property, liable at any time to be built upon. Skamania county's first fair was notable in several respects and aside from hue displays of grains, grasses. fruits and vegetables, its display of needlework equalled llood Ulver's and in displays of flowers, canned fruits and jellies and paintings, Ska mania's home making women folk sur passed Hood Kiver's. llood Kiver is American improved and progressive and deserves her gos pel measure of prosperity but it seems to me should have mure flowers iu a park ot ample size, preserve tbe grand old oaks and pines and own an expo sition site close in. llelieve There Will be lira ft Members of tbe local Grange associ ations are taking up good roads leg rslatlou and examining tbe bills whioh it is expected will be brought up for consideration when the Legislature meets this winter says, tbe Telegram, It is stated by A. An objectionable featute of tbe Oood Koads Association's measures is said to be tbe bonding feature, which tbe Grangers claim puts too mucb power in Ihe bands of tbe state ottioilas. It Is iutimated tbat tbis feature of tbe hill will be fought to a Uuimsh it the attempt Is made to inoorpoiate it iu tbe measure which committees from both organizations will be asked to frame up at a meeting to take plaoe in Portland this month. Mr. Mason believes tbat an expression of some kind from tbe agricultural commun ities thorughout the state ought to be obtained in regard to good roads leg islatinn, and is endeavoirng to ascer tain what residents ot Hood Kiver county think about it. When tbe good roads association was, formed here about 100 signed the membership papers, which contained tbe bonding feature, but be does not tbink tbis is a suflioient Indication of what tbe majority want. Members oi tbe state Urangae Association, it is stated, beliove tbat tbe immense amount ot money that would pass through a limited number of bauds in tbe state government would leave room tor graft. Entertained Farmer Fainter A very pleasant sooial event t ook place at tbe home of Mr. and Mrs. E. K Uoff Friday evening whon tbey entertained Alfred Montgomery, the well known farmer artlnt and speaker before Chautauqua assemblies, whose home is in the middle west, but who is making a tour ot tbo coast. About forty of Hood Kiver's well known residents were present to meet Mr. Montgomery who v was Introduced by Dr. O. W. Edmunds who knew tbe former before coming to Hood Kiver. Tbe Farmer Painter as he is known made a very witty and pleasing ad dress which was much enjoyed by those preseut. Ibe principal matter taken up by tbe club was that ot providing apples for exhibition purposes. Tbe demands for frott for this use this year are very numerous. In addition to tbe exhibits wbiob will take place at Spokane and Seattle and the meet ing of tbe Oregon Slate Horticultural Society in Portland, requests bave been received from tbe editor of tbe St. Joseph Fruitgrower for a display to be sent to Uounoll UiufTs and af terwards taken to tbe meeting of tbe Mltsouri State Horticultural .Sooiety at Columbus. Owing to tbe fact tbat it baa been didlcult for tbe publicity committee of the dub to get applea to display in it tbe booth has been- closed for a week or ten days. Several members of tbe club stated tbat since it had been opeued tbey had found that it was oue ot tbe best and most practical ways of advertising the fruit ot tbe valley that bad ever been devised and very earnestly advocated that tha dis play be renewed and tbe growers asked tojhelp in keeping a good display In tbe booth. On motion a soliciting com mittee was appointed to obtain apples for tbis purpose aud another oommit toe also appointed to arrange for some one to look after tbe exhlolt and keep it In shape. After tbe try outs have been held and debates have determined tbe championship team in each district, inter-district contests will be held to select the two best teams for tbe Anal debate, which takes plaoe at the Unl veisity of Oregon in May.
