also been set apart for the labratory.

runs throughout the building aud 100
feet of hose will be supplied lor tbis
purpose on each floor. A fire escape

from tbe top floor iu tbe rear to tbe
ground.

Tbe exterior of tbe building is fin
ished oft in red brick with gray trim
mings. The steps are painted in this
oolor and frieze which egxtends round
the top of tbe stiuoture has on it tbe
names of classical characters. On tbe
east wiug are those of Aristotle and
viigil, ou the front U ruin us, Grac
chus, aud Homer, and ou tbe west
mug, Agnppa uud fvapiei. The arch
itecture of tbe structure which was
planned by P. M. Hall-Lewis is plain
aud impressive, the front view partic
ularly giving the impiessiou of a Bub-
BtautiHl utilitarian structure adapted
to the uses for whioh it was erected
without any gingerbread or spectacu

When we visited Hood Kiver, a dry
town, actively engaged upon construc

Kiver laoks adequate park preserves
and their great apple show, while
well located, was held upon private
property, liable at any time to be
built upon.
Skamania county's first fair was
notable in several respects and aside
from hue displays of grains, grasses.
fruits and vegetables, its display of
needlework equalled llood Ulver's
and in displays of flowers, canned
fruits and jellies and paintings, Ska
mania's home making women folk sur
passed Hood Kiver's.
llood Kiver is American improved
and progressive and deserves her gos

Entertained Farmer Fainter
A very pleasant sooial event t ook
place at tbe home of Mr. and Mrs. E.
K Uoff Friday evening whon tbey
entertained Alfred Montgomery, the
well known farmer artlnt and speaker
before Chautauqua assemblies, whose
home is in the middle west, but who
is making a tour ot tbo coast. About
forty of Hood Kiver's well known
residents were present to meet Mr.
Montgomery who v was Introduced by
Dr. O. W. Edmunds who knew tbe
former before coming to Hood Kiver.
Tbe Farmer Painter as he is known
made a very witty and pleasing ad
dress which was much enjoyed by
those preseut. He also bail on exhi
bition a number ot liU One paintings
of farm scenes which delighted tbe
guests. "During tbe evening light
refreshments were setved.
Mr. Montgomery is making a study
of tbe apples iu tbe valley with a
view to reproducing tbem on oauvas
and will also deliver soveral publio
addresses here which will be anauged
for later.
Cameras will be admitted lo the
grounds of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacilic
exposition. The size limit has been
fixed at 4x.r or 3!4x5.'g. Permit must
be secured from tbe manager of con
cessions, but do cost will be attached.

Tbe regular monthly meeting of tbe
Commercial Club was held Monday
evening. Ibe principal matter taken
up by tbe club was that ot providing
apples for exhibition purposes. Tbe
demands for frott for this use this
year are very numerous. In addition
to tbe exhibits wbiob will take place
at Spokane and Seattle and the meet
ing of tbe Oregon Slate Horticultural
Society in Portland, requests bave
been received from tbe editor of tbe
St. Joseph Fruitgrower for a display
to be sent to Uounoll UiufTs and af
terwards taken to tbe meeting of tbe
Mltsouri State Horticultural .Sooiety
at Columbus. Tbe club is also re
quested to send three boxe to the
experiment station of Cornell Univer
sity at Itbaoa, N. Y.

The proposition from tbe St. Joseph
Fruitgrower to plaoe an exhlibt at
Council Ulu(fs was originally submit
ted to tbe Apple Growers Union. The
exhibit asked for is one of ten boxe
but tbe directors of tbe union deol'u
ed to take any aotlon in the. matter
and turned it over to the club, whioh
will make an effort to do something
about It. It will also endeavor to
send tbe fruit which ia asked for by
Cornell University.
Another matter tbat occupied the
attention of the club was tbat of pro
viding apples for the exhibit booth.
Owing to tbe fact tbat it baa been
didlcult for tbe publicity committee
of the dub to get applea to display in
it tbe booth has been- closed for a
week or ten days. Several members
of tbe club stated tbat since it had
been opeued tbey had found that it
was oue ot tbe best and most practical
ways of advertising the fruit ot tbe
valley that bad ever been devised and
very earnestly advocated that tha dis
play be renewed and tbe growers asked
tojhelp in keeping a good display In tbe
booth. On motion a soliciting com
mittee was appointed to obtain apples
for tbis purpose aud another oommit
toe also appointed to arrange for
some one to look after tbe exhlolt and
keep it In shape.
Debating District Added
The State High Sobool Debating
Lesgue, of which Prof. rJ. E. DeCou,
ot tbe state University la secretary,
is already beginning active operations
tor tbe year's work. Thirty-live high
schools have entered tbe League and
some of them have already held tbeir
tiyouts. A new debating district tor
Coos Hay has been oreated it addi
tion to the tour ot last yearof Colom
bia Kiver, Southern, Cential and
Eastern Oregon.
After tbe try outs have been held
and debates have determined tbe
championship team in each district,
inter-district contests will be held to
select the two best teams for tbe Anal
debate, which takes plaoe at the Unl
veisity of Oregon in May.
A new bulletin containing full in
fomation In regard tu all the ques
tions to be debated is now In the
hands of the printer and will be
mailed as soon as possible.

Prosperity has been life in all paiti
of Oregon, and all tbe election had to
do with it one way or the other was
to give some men an exouse to wait.
Now tbat even tbat is useless people

ing activity will be more marked than
at any time in tbe history of tbe

ISLATION MEETING
A mass meeting to discues tbe mat
ter of good roads legislation will be
held in the Commercial Club Kooms
Saturday afternoon atji o'clock. The
meeting Is being called to asoertian
the views of residents tbroughont the
valley in regard to this important
matter and It is hoped there will be
a large representation fromevery dis
trict in the valley. Tbe meeting is
being held largely for the benefit of
residents out of town although every
oue who is Interested is asked to be

First Shipment of Hook Kiver Spray
Hood Kiver Spray -Company ship
ped its first installment ot spray Wed
nesday. The shipment consisted ot
two carloads, one of wbiob was sent
to iiritieb Columbia. Tbe plant,
wbiob was put in operation tbe latter
part of last week shows tine efficiency
and cooks a batch of spray "in about
six hours.
