HOOD R1VEBOLAC1EK THURSDAY JUNE 11 100S. OREGOX STATE NEWS IX BRTXF. The thirteenth annual rennloa f the Umatilla county pioneers was held last week at Weston. Isaac H. Smith, SS years of age, prominent and wealthy builder and contractor of Tillamook, committed suicide last week by using carbolic acid. One of the largest shipment- of sheep this season was made from Condon last week, when 10 carloads were sent East The price paid was $2. GO a head after shearing. George McDonald, of Pendleton, has lost 250 head of sheep In two nights through their eating a weed common on the McKay Creek ranch, but to which the sheep were not ac customed. W. E. Conyers, of ClaUkanle, a noted hunter, killed a cougar last week that measured nine feet two Inches from tip to tip. After the animal had killed about $160 worth f stock the farmers telephoned for Conyers, who soon ended bis exist ence. William Wight, a prominent cttl sen of Klamath County, was serious ly Injured last week by being kicked by a horse. He fell under the ani mal's feet and was trampled until several ribs were broken. It Is thought he has a fair chance for re covery. Joseph Jacobs, the Eugene mer chant who was found guilty last week by a Jury of selling liquor In violation of the local option law, was given the maximum fine by Judge Bryson. He was fined $600 and given SO days In the county Jail. This was Jacobs' second offense. Stripped stark naked, his body bruised and covered with mud and fllth and his mind a blank, C. C. Dragged 200 yards by a runaway horse, his head pounding on the hard ground, kicked and trampled upon by the frightened animal, Waldo, the 16-year-old son of Oliver I. S. Geer, living near Burns, was severely In jured last week. The doctors say he has a chance for recovery. The Hammer Visitor. Probably most of you bave already made your plana toi tb summer. If you are to stay at borne with no pedal recreation during the hot months you are probably resigned to it and if you are looking forward to making a trip and a visit, you bave doubtless notllied your to be hostess ere tbls. But It Is to the woman wbo not only must stay at borne, but wbo Is to bs besieged with company that cne's heart goes out. Hbe may not require sympathy. 8 he may be one of the fortunate mortals, able to hire plenty of help, and to whom hospi tality mesus no sacrifice of strength or of personal desires or needs. Or bet guests way be of that rare class who do not demand much entertain ln and wbo lit into tbe borne and take parts in lis duties as if tbey were members of the family. But If her means and room are limited, en tertaining often entails much bard work an1 inconvenience, and tbe hostess frequently looks forward to tbe advent of guests with diead, par ticularly If tbey have never visited her before and she does not know what to expect. A young matron was relating ber experiences during her brief married life and she said : "I bave been so swamped with com- Eany during tbe two summers we ave kept house that euob fall Dick and I bud to close tbe cottage and go to boarding to give me a rest. You never really know people till tbey vis it you.v Two of my life-long friends wrote me that tbey were coming to spend h month last summer and 1 wna overjoyed at the prospect, but after wards. Those girls knew belore tbey oaino that I bad to do my owa work, but after breakfast the first morning Maude excused herself, say ing she had a letter to write. Grace asked tor a dust cloth and said: "While yoAi are doing your kitchen work I'll duet the piano," so 1 went blithely ut my dishes, thinking that the rest of tbe bouse would be all put lu order by the time I was through. But it wasn't. Tbe dust ing bad stopped at the piano, and tbe girts were out In tbe hammock, reading and eating candy, and by the time I bad straightened things, it was time to start tbe luncb. 1 don't know what wise spirit prevented me from making their bed and picking up tbe room, but they did not touch it till 5 o'clock that afternoon, evi dently thinking I bad forgotten it. As 1 had not made It the first day, It was easy not to do It at any time, so spreading tbe bed and hsnglng up their olotboa was the only systeniatio work tbey did the whole month. Each f them wiped tbe dishes a few times, but their watbings ware so enormous that 1 bad to bin my laundress two days a week tmttead of one. ihey ou ght me a beautiful present before bey went, and since it all barpeuea a year ago I try to torget it and think s much of them as I did befor, but Dick was so euraged that be declares be is going to bave some oarda print ed to mail to every person wbo threat ens to vlxlt us. lie basn't formulat ed it so that it will read smoothly and easily and hurt no one's feelings, but the real meaning Is to be about like this: "'Madam: My wife doese all br own work. If you will agreto bele ber through all or It, to make up for tbe extra work you cause, we shall be delighted to see you. Otherwise please stay away.' Wouldntt that be awful, but really you don ' know bow overworked 1 was last ear, and so much entertaining pets frightfully. Everyone made us p resents, but it was always luxuries and 1 really wor ried awfully over ou1 big butober and grocery bills. There are avgreat many things a persoo should think over belore ao oeptlng an Invitation to visit, and un less you can fit in with your hostess' mode of lialng, don't go. Your trip should be pleasure to her as well as to yourself, and It lies with you 'whether is or not. It she has to do her oit work. Tbe fact that you are not wnd to housework does not In the luse exouse you from helping her. Ieastn't hurt you any more than t woa ber, since you are equals or yit doeuldn't be visiting ber. Don'tou woer what ycu can do to sebel ask h us experience baa show yond if previowou't assign you any eyoud feeding feeding the bird ao- waterlog tbe plants. If she has to do tbe washing, either help ber witb it or assume tbe kitobeu work while she Is doing it. Wbeo sweeping day eomes, help ber till sbe's through. We are often advised that it is a guests duty alaays to be dressed daintily, out of compliment to ber hostess, and to euter heartily into all amusements plsnoed for ber and be in everv wsy as entertaining as pos sible. This is very true, but your hostess would appreciate It immense ly If once or ftwice during your stay you would volunteer to plan, oook, and serve tbe entire evening mesl, giving ber a cbsnge ot cooking, and an opportunity to dress herself dalot lly, and eome to tbe table cool and fresh looking, Instesd of flushed from tending over a hot stove. I It she bss a family of children, take charge of them some day and give ber a rest of a few hours. If ber sew ing Is piled higb, you can belp ber a little here if you choose. In short, study to make ber enjoy your visit and get as much plesauie cut cf It as sbe is trying to give you. We often hear people say tbat on their vacation tbey want complete cbuoge of scene and occupation, and perhaps it often is necessary, Litt tbe woman ho Is seeking eotiie rest from housework baa no right to ao cept an Invitation from one wbo does ber own work, no matter how urgent ly tbe Invitation Is extended, Hint woman's plsoe Is at a hotel or board na-bouse, wbere sbe osu pi y loi every servioe she demands. Liokl'f at It selOsbly, It mignc appear lo -i visitor tbat bar vsiation v.iuld be tin rest at alt, if she had to share 11 tbe housework, but wbere would ber lionl- ess' plessure oome in, If tbe l.ud lo do It every bit herseiir Stomach Troubles. Though tens of thousands of persons yearly see tbe great rocking atone of Bronx park In New York city, few realize thnt It Is the city's most con spicuous souvenir of the glacial period, when all of this section was covered with an ocean of Ice some 1,500 feet thick tbat was moving slowly toward the south. Tbat pinkish bit of granite, weighing thirty tons, standing seven and one half feet above Its rocky base, being teu feet broad and eight feet thick, came from tbe far north, carried In the resistless Icy arms of the glacier thut swept over the continent down to this latitude, marking Its path by de positing great bowlders as It moved and leaving scratches on the firm rocki beneath, from tbe sliding, grinding bits and masses of granite that set tled to Its base and were pushed along as It moved. This same bowlder left Its mark on the hare face of the rocky bill to the north of It, In which Ilea the crocodile pool. There the scratches are visible today, poluttug to wbere the bowlder stands and telling the story of part of Its travels. When tbe melting ice departed from the great block of granite, it left it standing through the ages a rocking stone so delicately poised that a pres sure of fifty pounds exerted ou Its most northern angle causes Its apes to sway north aud south about two inch-ea.-New York Herald. The wife wbo greets her husband with a smile when he returns from his day's toll and who has a smile for hint when he starts out again in tbe morn ing has a far happier future before her than awaits her sister who Is al ways nagging ber husband and wbo seldom Is seen to smile except when strangers are present, and as the gen iality of tbe parents Is one of tbe traits that Is apt to be passed along to their children tbe little ones who are raised on smiles have a far better heritage than those who have cross words and frowus three times a day and between meals.
