KM 'aim &WM 'Hli&iuAv. iotoa ii. mi. - . i - - - llr SI Woman'sWorld MRS. JAN KUBELIK, Who U Happily Married U a Man of Genius, Twenty-seven years ago the jr Bohemian market gardener Kuuellk. to whom a son had Just beou born, would have called Insane anybody who predicted that the baby would have to marry Into the moist exclusive aristoc racy In Europe. In big part of the world music la the supreme art, anJ It aeemed natural that the kins of modern violinists should wed Countess Marianne Czaky, daughter of one of those ancient Bohemian houses that trace their origin further back than any other aristocracy In Europe. Ku bellk was but twenty-three years old nt the time of his marriage, and the 7r MllS. JAN KUBELIK. little countess was even younger. They live at KoIIn, Bohemia, wher the famous violinist has bought a cat tle, and there they divide their time between music and the care of thelc twlu daughters. If there Is anything In the adage that a good son makes a good husband, Mrs. Kubellk should bt very happy, for her husband is devofc ed to bis old peasant mother and deep, ly reveres the memory of his father, who mado every sacrifice for his son's musical education. The first money Jan earned by playiug he spent in buying a wreath for bis father's grave. Kubellk la making a concert tour in America this winter, and his wife ac companies him. An Effective Room Decoration. Not every girl Is so fortunate as to have a large room for herself, and especially If she be of a large family her own private room may be very small Indeed, and it Is then that all a girl's ingenuity is brought Into full play so that the best possible effect may be obtained In a limited space. Nothing so reflects a girl's character and personality as her own bedroom or boudoir. First of all, an outsider can tell whether the girl is naturally neat or given to shiftlessness. The books first and then the pictures on the wall show Nthat sort of things most appeal to her, whether she is frivolous or perhaps too serious minded, and even the wall paper reflects the natu ral characteristics to a certain extent, for a bright pink room with rose color abounding everywhere must needs bo long to a sunny, happy disposition, while a soft green paper relieved by a note of pink or yellow in the border and hangings is said to portray a char acter fond of quiet and intellectual pursuits. It is of course far easier to make a large room bright and attractive than a small one, but if the wall paper is carefully selected, of a pattern that tepds to give the effect of space behind the design, and if the hangings carry out the exact design and color of the paper considerable size is added to the room. A striped paper, for example, Is not good in a long, narrow room un less there rs n deep flower border to shorten and widen the effect, while a small design in tiny flowers or spray Is better In a small than a large room. For an extremely tiny room a plain miner moire or cartridge is best, with the curtains and chair coverings of the same shade in chintz or or a ongui flowered chintz matching the border of the paper. The glazed English chintzes are de rlrlPfllv fashionable at the moment, and tertniiily they do tend to brighten a room even more thnn the American mnl French chintz, with its soft, dull surface. In selecting the hangings as ivMi an the naner for a room there is much to be taken Into consideration beyond the mere choosing of an attract tlve pattern or pretty shade of color lug. How to Hang a Portiere. A portiere of denim or cretonne beautifully hung by using loops of the material Instead of metal or wooden rings. The loops are an Inch and a quarter or an Inch and a half wide when finished. They are sewed at the top of the curtain and made long enough to slip easily over the rod. My portieres are a plain pink denim trim med with a striped and flowered cre in ninir and white, and the loops " y.un. ' ' are from dtrlpes of the cretonne. For smaller curtains these loops coma o of tape, braid, ribbon or whatever might be most suitable. Remember, these will not slip over the pole as easily as metal rings, but sometimes that ! more desirable.
