Salem Returns from 29 precincts
give Cake a lead over Chamberlain
in Marlon County of 49 votes and
Cake is gaining gradualy. Indica
tions are that bo wil carry the coun
ty by about 125. The same returns
give a majority in the county against
prohibition of 160, and In the city
of Salem against prohibition of 97.
Indications are that tbe county will
go wet by 600 and the city by 200.
Iiusbey, Republican, will carry the
county against Frazier, Democrat,
for County Judge, by 300, and the
entire Republican legislative ticket,
three Statement One and two anti
Statement One, will be elected. The
armory bill will carry, but the uni
versity appropriation bill and single
tax and . woman's .suffrage amend
ments are defeated.
Clackamas for the Governor.
Oregon City Complete returns
front 21 precincts In Clackamas
County give Cake 1316 and Cham
l.viuin. 1545. The vote on prohi
bition, with 40 pfer cent of the vote

The entire Ilepubllcan county ticket,
with the ' e:;:?ption of Asseaor and
Sheriff, is ciecied. Tbe county high
school measure will be defeated, as

The entire Democratic Legislative

bition won In every precinct of th

St. Helens Incomplete return!

carry the county by 500. The uni
versity appropriation will carry by ft
large vote. The woman's suffrage
is defeated.
Astoria Against .Cake.
Astoria Clatsop will give Cham
berlain at least 260 majority over
Cake. The other Republican state
ticket carries the county by at least
500.
Cake Ahead In Lane.
Eugene Partial returns from 24
precincts out of 50 give Cake 1225
and Chamberlain 978. The county
goes dry by about 800.
Tilamook Favors Cake.
Tillamook Fifteen out of II pre
clncts in Tillamook County give
Cake 534 and Chamberlain 463. Lo
cal option will carry the county by
70 votes.
Chamberlain in Malheur by 100.
Ontario Chamberlain carried
Malheur by 100. The Democrats
elected the county judge, assessor,
treasurer, surveyor, school superin
tendent and county clerk.
Cake Ijeads In Washlnngton.
Hlllsboro Cake has 1260 and
Chamberlain 1169 from Incomplete
returns. Dllley precincts went dry
by 10 votes and the county result on
prohibition Is not yet known.
Jackson Itooats the Governor.
Jacksonville Cake has 211 and
Chamberlain 340. For prohibition,
wet 277, dry 311. Except in tho
cases of Judge and Sheriff, the en
tire Republican ticket Is elected.
Cake Ahead in Umatilla.
Pendleton With one-halt the en
tire vote ot the county totaled In
Umatilla County, Cake Is 257 ahead.
County precincts generally are being
reported In Cake's favor.
Crook County Goes Dry.
Prlnesvllle Partial returns from
23 out of SO precincts In Crook
County give Cake 500 and Chamber
lain 664. Local option wins 111 every
precinct 3 to 1.
'fclectric Line Under Way In Coos.
Marshfleld Actual work has been
started on an electric line for Coos
Bay. It will be known as the Coos
Bay Railway & Terminal Company,
and the builders and owners are
Henry Hewitt, the St. Paul Lumber
man, Seymour H. Bell, who Is his
partner In various interests on Coos
Bay, and L. J. Simpson, manager ot
the Simpson Lumber Company and

Oregon Sheep for Omaha.
Heppner F. C. Oxman shipped a
train ot 35 cars of Sheep to South
Omaha to graze In transit at Rock
Rtver, Wyo., last week." Mr. Oxman
bought quite extensively here this
spring, being next to Rea Bros., of
Montana in purchases. These sheep
are all mutton sheep and will be
fatted at Rock River and this fall
loaded on the cars and marketed in
Omaha. This is the last shipment
of any consequence and practically
closes the sheep market for this sea
son. The price Is from 60 cents to
$1 under that. J last year, which
has caused a good many sheepmen to
hold on to their Jlocks for another
year. - ,
' Father and Child Killed.

and his 10-year-old daughter were
Instantly killed this morning by
train No, i . on the railroad bridge
near. town.. Scott was enjoying .a
Sunday walk with his daughter and
three boys. They were overtaken by
the train Iu th middle of the bridge.
The boys escaped, but Scott stayed
to extricate thq. girl's foot, which
was fast between the ties.

more valuable land Involved.
Many years ago the Stat ot Ore
gon placed lieu land scrip on these
lands. Later, upon ascertaining that
(he base used for scrlpplng by the
state was a part of the famous Odell
base, and was not actually mineral
land, A. D. Daniels, of Wisconsin, to
whom the land had been disposed of
under the state's scrip selections, at
tempted to place other scrip on the
land. His offer of scrip was reject
ed by the local Land Office offloials,
because the records indicated that
the land was yet the property of the
state under the Initial selection.. At
a later date the state filed a relin
quishment of Its rights under tha
original scrip and the land was
thrown open to settlement, selection,
etc. The Governor, Secretary of
State and State Treasurer of Oregon,
who were In office during that time
and constituted tha State Land
Board, are openly accused ot per
mitting fraudulent scrip applications
to p:tsi.
In the meantime homestead set
tlers have lived tha allotted time ot
their claims, or have commuted, and
their entries have in many Instances
passed to patent In tho General Land
Office. Many of tha clatma have
been purchased from settlera and in
dividual claimants by Umber and
lumber companies, and soma of them
have changed hands a half doaen
times. If the decision ot the Secre
tary of tho Interior should finally
be In favor ot tha Daniels acrlp. aa
the vendee and successor ot tho
state's Interest, there will ba noma
lively litigation resulting from tha
numerous transfers of tho land in
volved. .
Growth of Seventh-Day Adrentista
Portland Elder F. S. Bunch, who
is presiding over the Oregon Confer
ence of the Seventh-Day Adventlst
Church, which is being bald in con
nection with the camp masting at
St. Johns, mads Mo yearly report
Saturday morning. The report shows
a steady growth ot tho church. Tha
membership In 1906 waa 1141, and
in 1907, HIS. Thara were 41
churches In 1906, and 45 In 1907.
The tithe receipts for 1906 were
119,714.65, while in 1907 receipts
from this source wera 125,094.77;
$3663 was spent in tha improvement
ot church schools, of which there ara
six in Western Oregon, located at
Montavllla, Monitor, Astoria, Blatch
Icy and Hopewell. They also gave
310,466 toward tha eollega debt at
Walla Walla. Besides tha atx church
schools, there are In thla confaranca
three academies Lauralwood Acad
emy, near Gaston; Royal Academy,
near Cottage Grove, and Gravel Ford
Academy, near Myrtle Point.
Foot of Snow In Nevada.
Ely, Nev., May 81. Tho heaviest
snow storm since last winter waa ex
perienced here last night. Fully a
foot of snow fell. The storm was
general between Ely and Cobra. No
damage has been reported.
