Places Ban on "Merry Widows." Up in tbis pait of the country the people, particularly tbe women, seem to desire hats as' large as possible," said Charles W. Hastings, of Mexioo City, at tbe Hotel Portland recently. "Of course I refer to tbe merry wi dow hat. Also tbe Scanus bonnet. Big bats, sombreros, have been all tbe go in Mexioo tor years and always will be popular, I guess. But tbe sombiero Is doomed in tbe state of Jalisoo, Mexico. Ihe legislature has declared against it. Ihe legislators have found that the picturesque som brero is a nuisance rind tbat tbe Mex ican -vbo wears it must have a lioense. Besides be must have a number on tbe bat. A'itbuut tbis the wearer Is subjeot to arrest and a fine. Tbe objeot of the fine Istooure tbe peon's taste for tbis style of t p cover, wblob corded with gilt and silver is some times six feet or more across tbe brim, and so expensive that a poor Mexican often works a whole year in order to earn tbe price of one. Ihe longing for a sombrero among tbe Mexicans bas the desire for a merry widow or a Panama among tbe people up here trimmed to a finish. The sombrero is one of tbe attractions of Mexioo. To attempt to drive It out of Jalisoo by liceutiug it and fixing a number (.late like a gasoline devil wagon wili be retented by tbe tour 1st a.
