The Choir for Qnees. To the people o( Hood River Valley who are voting for a 'Jueon to pte.iile over tbe Ilootl Kiver float at the lions Carnival to be held io Portland the first week la Jane, it seeni ai It tbe choice should be made of one who fulfills all of tbe requirement! ot Hood liirer Valley. Now, personally, 1 know all tbe candidates being voted for and a more bandsome and intelli gent set ot girls oannot be found lo tbe whole world. We are prood to think tbey belong to Hood Kiver, but as we produoe tbe best apples tbe world bus ever known and tbe straw berries tbat first made Hood Kiver alley famous, It seems as if we should bnve genuine Hood Kiver Valley girl to preside as queen on our iioibi noat, which win be nmie up 01 roues and flowers of all description, even to apple and straw bet it blos soms, made perfect by tbis beautiful climate and bright sun. it would seem to us we should bave a queen tbat has bad all these advantages. In Margaret MckeUen ire bave a girl who was born and raised under all ot these advantages. A sure production of Hood Kiver Valley, seoood to none lu graoe and beauty. Now, I auk tbe old settlers like myself, wbo bave seen tbis valley develop from a sandy waste to a beautiful garden, and Mar gaiet from a tiny baby to a beautiful girl, to come to ber support; also tbe grangers, as she is a worthy member ot Park Urange, tbe largest grsoge In the valley, believing tbat all detiire we should bave notblog but Hood Kiver productions on tbe float all ie quirementa are complied with. Old Settler. ItUlousnes and Constipation. For years I wss troubled with bilious ness and constipation, wbicli made life miserable lor me. My appetite failed me. I lost my usual force and vital it v. Pepsin preparations and cathartics only made matters worse. I do not know where I should have been today had I not tried Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver Tablets. They are ot the best of the earth, tbe kind we like to see come to S. Johns to live. Our old frl. nd, Oscar Stranaban, aooonipiiuied by his daughter-In law, Mrs. Hert Strannhan, ot Hood Kiver, were oalleis at the Keview ottloe Wed nesday. Mrs. Stranaban is a good friend of our onmposltor, Miss Keller. Hotb Mr. and Mrs. Stranaban leport things lively and everything lovely in the apple city. Dig crop prospects, big building projects, big money in Hood Kiver realty, in tact a big thing in a little valley la Hood Kiver and j her environments, and we believe every word ot it; but tbe climate of H. The Most Common Cause of Suffering; Rheumatism causes more pain and suffering than any other disease, fer the reason that it is the most common of all ills, and it is certainly gratifying to sufferers to know that Chamberliiin'B Vain Balm will afford relief, and make rest and sleep possible. In many cases the relief from pain, which is at first temporary, has Itecome permanent, while in old people subject to chronic rheumatism, often brought on by (lump iiess or changes In the weather, h per manent cure cannot he expected; the relief from pain which this liniment af fords is alone worth many times its cost. 25 and 50 sizes for sale by Keir A Cass. . "Too Much Watchdog." "loo Much Watobdog" la tbe tab- Set of a leading editorial by the orniog Astorlan ot recent date, wherein tbat paper takes a subtle fling at tbe state giangsaod peads tot support ot two deserving measures tbat art to be voted on under tbe tef erendum at the June election. Tbe measures referred to are tbo armory bill and tbe state university bill. "It is all very well to be careful of tbe public funds in these days of ex travagance and publio graft," says the "Astorian, "but legitimate ends must be served with a liberality that at least will not cripple nncessaiy functions of tbe common good, or dis parage them at tbe critical moment when thoir highest faculty tor the publio is at band. "Both Institutions to be benefitted, tbe national guard and the state uni versity, Jaie valuable and necessary agonolee ot tbe state's entourage," tbe Astorian continues. "Tbey are indispensible to its growth, culture and protection. Both are necessary functions of every state government and all through the land the stiites have seen lit to endow tbetn more lib erally than has Oregon. Watchdogs have been known to overdo tbe thing time and again to t'e utter negation of tbe real good aud we feel tbat tbe Oregon grauge is working its stunt in those two cases to a degree tbat will leave the state of Oregon cheapened aid discredited if it is to bave its way in these two appropriations." "Oregon grows apace," tbe Astor'an concludes. "Her people and ber am plified future demand more of ber than in tbe early days when essentials were fewer. On these especial lines she must range along with tbe states of her class and do bei beat and full doty by her none and daughters at well as by tbe country at Imge. It will not do to stop at tbe dollar mark every time It is hoisted by some nar row prejudice or cbill conservatism." Whooping Cough. "In Februury our daughter had the whooping cough. Mr. Lane, of Hart land, recommended Chamberlain's Cough Itcmoly and said it gave his cus tomers the best of satisfaction. Tbe trees are chiefly ot tbe winter varieties. He is most eothnsiastio over tbe outlook, and said: "I bave thoroughly gone over tbe country tributary to Coeur d'Alene. Tbe number ot trees being planted this year will tar exceed my expectations. 1 plaoed tbe number last fall at 20.000. A shoit time ago 1 increased tbis to M.000 trees, but 1 And I am far below tbe number, be cause I have already inspected more tbso 00.000. 1 am convinced there will be over 70,000 trees planted tbis spring within a 12-mile radius ot Coeur d'Alene. On tbe whole, tbe trees planted have been of good varie ties and stock. However, 1 found in one neigbbotbood an order of 700 trees, '200 ot which were of Lad stock. These, although set out, were toru upnd destroyed and 1 have repotted the matter to the state board. All trees must b inspected, and had these been examined it would have saved time, mony and labor."
