The orris & Rowe Circus.
To parade or not to parade was a
qaeition that the IU o r ns matnttta
pondered over with much deliberation
during tbe meeting of the advisory
and executive committees of tbe big
amusement combine. For the pant
three years tbe Barnuru & Bailey cii-
cob ba. not given a parade, but is
that show bas become a possession of
tbe Ringling Bros , tbe questlou of
change of polioy ws brought op.
For a time it looked as though the
ciroua parade would be a thing of tbe
past, but Norris & Rowe held out te
naciously for the i-treet pagent, and
won out in both committees, and as a
result all of tbe three big circuses
wlll cootinoe tbe parades, bot will
put tbetn on niocb more elaborately
than heretofore.
By tbe arrangemeot of territory tbe
liarnum k Bailey circus will be ieu
in tbe New Koglaud states; the King
ling broe. In tbe middle west and
southern states aod Ureatei Norris t
Rowe circus, museum, hippodromes
and 4ongreaa of nations will be seen
in all tbe cities west of tbe Rookies,
fcy this arrangement the territory wlU
be equally divided among tbe big
ihows. The liarnum k Bailey oircos
opened tbeir season in New York; tbe
Ringling Bros, in Cbioago aud tbe
Creator Norris k Kowe olicos io San
Francisco, where it exhibited for
thirty days to 279,873 paid admis
sions, whiob is more people than ever
before attended a circus, in tbat per
iod, in tbe history of tbe west.
The performers whom they engaged
for tbis season's tour are mostly of
European reputation. Tbe show bas
been enlarged to suob an extent tbat
it now oompaies favorably with the
two other big circuses in tbe combine.
Ihe press of San Francisco wereonan
Imous in proclaiming tbe Norila k
Rowe circus to be tbe best ever seen
in tbat city. Tbe poblio evidently
concurred in this opinion, for tbey
attended tbe performance, and tbeir
applause was sincere and prolonged.
The big speolal feature of tbe Norris
4 Rowe cirous tbis season is tbe Con
gress of Nations, a wondertol speotsc
ular productiou Iu wbicb leprecenta
tive athletes from all qnarters ot tbe
globe, decked out in tbe vari colored
costumes of their native lands appear.
Tbe Noiris k Rowe oircos will be tbe
only big show to visit tbe west tbis
year. Tbey will exhibit in The Dalles,
Wednesday, May 13, matinee only.

Mineral Springs Hotel Co., at Carson,
Wash., for tbe Hawkeyesto bold tbeir

Tbe invitation was brought by
Harry S. Dano, wbo was at tbe
springs last week, aud Mr. Shipberd
told him that all meals, bot mineral
batb, oamping grounds and tbe coir
tesies of the plaoe would be famished
free for two days to the members of
the association. The Sbipberd broth

be aocepted if it is found tbe mem

Places Ban on "Merry Widows."
Up in tbis pait of the country the
people, particularly tbe women, seem
to desire hats as' large as possible,"
said Charles W. Hastings, of Mexioo
City, at tbe Hotel Portland recently.
"Of course I refer to tbe merry wi
dow hat. Also tbe Scanus bonnet.
Big bats, sombreros, have been all
tbe go in Mexioo tor years and always
will be popular, I guess. But tbe
sombiero Is doomed in tbe state of
Jalisoo, Mexico. Ihe legislature has
declared against it. Ihe legislators
have found that the picturesque som
brero is a nuisance rind tbat tbe Mex
ican -vbo wears it must have a lioense.
Besides be must have a number on
tbe bat. A'itbuut tbis the wearer Is
subjeot to arrest and a fine. Tbe
objeot of the fine Istooure tbe peon's
taste for tbis style of t p cover, wblob
corded with gilt and silver is some
times six feet or more across tbe
brim, and so expensive that a poor
Mexican often works a whole year in
order to earn tbe price of one. Ihe
longing for a sombrero among tbe
Mexicans bas the desire for a merry
widow or a Panama among tbe people
up here trimmed to a finish. The
sombrero is one of tbe attractions of
Mexioo. To attempt to drive It out
of Jalisoo by liceutiug it and fixing a
number (.late like a gasoline devil
wagon wili be retented by tbe tour
1st a. But the tourist, by tbe way,
is uot running the country."
