Jacket has wide lapels. 'Iridescent Suit' Is Setting Trend in Fall, This fall's most newsworthy development in the trend-setting department is the emergence of the "iridescent suit," in which sparkling gold, olive, blue and green threads are woven togeth er in the fabric so that suit actually changes color as its owner moves about. Introduced by several major manufacturers, the 'iridescent suit" seems a logical projection of the now well-entrenched light er, brighter look in men's suits, and in some circles is seen as the harbinger of a new and significant trend in this realm. CUTS COSTS NEW YORK (UPI) More than half the glazed ceramic wall tile now being installed in the United States is set in place with a "dry-set" mortar invent ed in 1957, according to the Tile Council of America which per fected and patented the mortar and licenses it for manufacture. The mortar, because it is light er, thinner and easier to use, has helped reduce tile installa tion costs by as much as 25 per cent, the Tile Council said. Exploiting the work of the purchased Italian ants, assum ing that they will acclimatize, survive and multiply, Soviet Russia expects to save millions of rubles just like Italy saved millions of Lira. The ants belong to a red spe cies labeled by entomologists as "formica rufa." Their specialty is to re establish, quickly, harmlessly and inexpensively the biological balance broken in some forests by leaf-eating in sects. The formica rufa is not a new discovery, but its "industrial' employ in Italy as an effective and costless insecticide dates back to only a few years ago when experts of the ministry of agriculture transplanted sever al colonies of them from the woods of the Lombard Alps to areas of the Tuscan Appen nines. Here large forests were being threatened with extinc tion by leaf-eating worms. Clean Forests The terrain was such in those areas that use of chemical in secticides, apart from the cost was almost impossible. In a few years the formica rufa which, according to entomologists, is one of the most advanced in sect societies known, multiplied and cleaned up the forests from the infesting worms and bugs. The result of the experiment was so successful that the min istry of agriculture extended it to .other areas. Sardinia's for ests were likewise infested and so were the big pine forests on the slopes of Sicily's volcano, Mount Etna. In Sardina, where millions of ants were shipped two years ago, the worm and bug reclama tion program is well under way. The ants are winning. Strange ly enough, the formica rufa did not acclimatize on Mount Etna. But local entomologists have not lost hope and are busy try ing to develop varieties more adaptable to the Sicilian habitat.
