Designers of upholstered lur niture often hark back to the Victorian age for inspiration this season. Loveseats, sofas and lounge chairs feature the diamond tufting and rich fabrics that were once the symbol nt "gentility." Add Modern Comfort But the stiff horsehair pieces that once graced front parlors have been modified for modern comfort. Today's cushioning is deep and buoyant. Latex foam rubber is the material frequent ly used, often with a fluffy layer of down or polyester fiberfill on top to create the soft, high crowned profile. Fabrics include rich-hucd vel vets, antique satins, damasks, crewel designs and silk-like blends. Many are pre-treated for soil and spot resistance. The lush expanded vinyls are very much in evidence and are par ticularly easy to keep clean. Colors range from burnished golds to tortoise shell shades such as black pearl and java brown. Reds are much in. evi dencesometimes in combina tion with green and mustard. Oak, that sturdy old-fashioned wood, is in the forefront this season. Sofas with exposed wood frames can often be used as room dividers because of their attractive look from any angle. Chairs, too, are handsome in profile with curving arms, carv ed legs and soaring backs. Most of the loungechairs have hidden swivels. Many are set on pedes tal bases of polished metal. And a great number are accompa nied by handsome ottomans. . Not all the fall lines are pe riod pieces, of course. Daytime dresses display tur tle necks, stovepipe collars, scarf or ascot-filled V-necks, detachable cuffed or rolled col lars, and bowed "Oliver-look" necklines. Dropped shoulder jumpers are worn over soft choirboy or Byron collared long sleeve blouses, or turtle neck sweaters. For evening, dresses feature King-Sized Beds on Fall Fashion Focus Healthful sleep equals luxu rious comfort, as home fashion for fall focuses on king-size beds and king-size bedding. September is "Measure Your Mattress Month," sponsored by the National Association of Bedding Manufacturers. "A mattress that fits you and your budget" and "custom-fitted luxury" are two of the "Meas ure Your Mattress" themes, pointing up the fact that mat tresses, like people, now come in a variety of sizes. Recommendation is that the five-six or over man (or wom an) needs a king-size bed for proper restful sleep, but such is the human preference for comfort, and particularly for comfort combined with shop ping values, that the king-size bed will by no means be the exclusive prerogative of the tallest. Increased interest in king-size mattresses and box springs, accompanied by steel frames and headboards in an extensive selection of materials, not only reflects the desire for health ful, comfortable sleep but also the current trend in home decor. King-size headboards offer scope to designers who are bor rowing from early New World styles, from Spanish-Mediterranean, Italian, French, tradition al and even Victorian moods to create a more opulent look for living. Best news for homemakers is that bed linens, blankets, bed' spreads in the desired king sizes are now available in an ever greater range of colors and pat' terns, for an important assist in making attractive home deco' rating easier. front or back decolletage, and are often accompanied by jackets. bkirts for falls skimmer, sheath and shift dresses are soft and slim shaped into easy A-lines, center pleats, panel fronts or bias cuts. They re main the same flattering length for daytime, but drop to-the-floor for the most femiryne and romantic evening dresses seen in years. Fashion s "long look " is at its most luxurious in dresses for elegant evenings out or at-home. Floor-length crepes are every where, as casually styled as shirtwaists, or real "femme fa tales" ready to slink into eve ning with side or back slits, "naked necklines" and opulent cover-ups. Costumes Important The costume is important for both day and dress wear. Sim ple one or two piece daytime dresses are worn under match ing or co-ordinated jackets or coats. Evening accompaniments are luxurious capes, jackets and floor-length coats. Fall's waist is lifted for high rise effects; slightly raised in front and dropped in back; slung low for a flattering stretched-out torso; or unmark ed. Dressier styles have a high, fitted front and a fall-away back. Many of fall's dresses have "carved" bodices, shaped with welt seaming, while others fea ture blouson bodices, often end ing in a low hip-belt. Reflecting Fashion The two faces of fall fashion are reflected in dress fabrics for autumn. In daytime dresses, fabrics have a casual, countri fied air. The emphasis is on herringbones, pinstripes and "mannish" tweeds, along with "dressier" mohairs, worsteds and wool crepes. Coat dresses come in real coating weight iweeas and woolens. Night time's the right time for opu lent crepes, velvets, silks, bro cades, chiffons and matelasses, often richly adorned with jet, braid or beading. It promises to be a colorful fall in dresses with plenty of cranberry, teal and other blues, vintage tones, winter navy, gold, topaz, brown. DOLLAR DAYS PAINT SPECIALS! sTloo off PER GALLON! Men's Suits Move Into Light Colors It's out of the dark and into the light for men this fall and winter as men's fashions trend toward the "light and bright" look. Men's tailored clothes will move away from the dominating blacks and dark tones into an era of silvery grays, rich irides cents, silvered browns and blues. The two-button suit in count less interpretations becomes the fashion front runner, backed by the classic three-button models and the high-style one-button ideas. Sportswear waves a red flag for fall and winter, presenting shades from the brightest fire men's red to deep, deep bur gundy. These colors will domi nate most segments of the sportswear field. The classic look will be an im portant factor in the styling pic ture throughout.
