Brown reporte.1 the high bid totaled $12,012.50, compared to the appraised price of SI 1, 697.50, an increase of 3 per cent. Next high bidder in the oral auction for the timber was Fred Schaffran of Prospect. Other bidder was J. G. Slack. Timhor in the unit consist ed of 200.000 board feet of , Douglas fir bid at $27 per forest service appraised price of $91,275, an increpsp of 2 per cent. The other bidder in the oral auction for the timber was Olson-Lawyer Lumber, Inc., Mcdford. Timber in the unit consist ed of 1.800,000 board fcet of Douglas fir bid at $24 per thousand board feet: 400.000 board feet of western white pine, ponderosa pine, and sugar pine bid at $21 per thousand board feet; 3.900,000 board feet of Shasta red fir bid at $8 per thousand board feet, and 1.300,000 board feel of white fir and other species thousand board feet: 150.00U board feet of western white pine bid at $22.50 per thous and board feet; 200,000 board feet of Shasta red fir bid at $11.65 per thousand board feet, and 150.000 board feet of white fir and other species bid at $6.05 per thousand board feet. In another sale, Stevi O. Wilson, White City, was high bidder for 7,400,000 board feet of limber in the Wizard Creek Blowdown area, Union Creek Ranger district. The high bid tutalcd $93. 200. Victor, co-directors of the experiment, said the first contact was made with Mer cury May 6 when the planet was approaching its closest proximity to the earth. Rough Surface The scientists said a pre liminary analysis of the sig nal patterns indicates Mer cury has a rougher surface than either Venus or Mars, but appears to have a surface reflectivity that is about the same at the moon. JPL has successfully made radar contact with two other planets in the past - Vcnut in 1961 and 1962 and Mars last February, These radar returns arc valuable in learn ing about the rotation rate, composition and surface char acteristics of the planets. They also serve as an astronomical yardstick for the universe and provide invaluable informa tion for future use in spaceflights.
