the experiment, said the first
contact was made with Mer
cury May 6 when the planet
was approaching its closest
proximity to the earth.
Rough Surface
The scientists said a pre
liminary analysis of the sig
nal patterns indicates Mer
cury has a rougher surface
than either Venus or Mars,
but appears to have a surface
reflectivity that is about the
same at the moon.
JPL has successfully made
radar contact with two other
planets in the past - Vcnut
in 1961 and 1962 and Mars
last February, These radar
returns arc valuable in learn
ing about the rotation rate,
composition and surface char
acteristics of the planets. They
also serve as an astronomical
yardstick for the universe and
provide invaluable informa
tion for future use in spaceflights.
