From how many pulpits to day, will you hear kindness to animals mentioned? With the exception of one or two, and this minority deserves a lot of credit, our churches are not even trying to overcome cruelty with good, because they simply do not teach hu maneness. They have no con sideration or the animal king dom and are not interested in learning anything about it - for instance that animals have the same feelings which we have, and many other sig nificant things that animal psychologists are finding out It never occurs to them that compassion and under standing in relation to ani. mals have any bearing on man's moral and spiritual quality and his treatment of his fellow-humans. According to the Bible, in relation to the creation of animals, "And God gave man dominion,1 man has in many cases proven himself unworthy of this trust. At a time when man seems to be chiefly concerned with the destruction of mankind, a plea for kindness and sym pathy to our "lesser brethren" assumes greater significance. It discloses the underlying cause for the tragedy and darkness engulfing the world today. Cruelly to weak and defenseless of all species -sinking to its lowest most de grading level, is our brutal exploitation of animals. The abuse of animals in present day science is the worst. Man's dominion over God's animals Is being misused when His creatures are mercilessly sub jected to suffering as they are in some American labora tories. And in the name of enter tainment -the cock-pit and' Sales Manager for PP&L Is Announced Appointment of Samuel M. Smith, Corvallis, as Copco di vision sales manager for Pa- bear-baiting ring have been outlawed - but one can scarce ly believe the cruelty invoNed in training large and wild ani mals for public performances. America's crudest sport it the "steer-busting' event in ro deos - where the animal is smashed to the ground with such violence that it will be stunned long enough for the roper to tie three of its feet together. In this "sport one out of every fifteen steers that leaves the chutes will be kill ed or crippled. The survivors are trucked from show to show and it is "busted" and stunned, again and again. If this creature could talk surely it would beg the mercy of man - even as nan now begs the mercy of God. But steer busters extend no mercy to the steer - for this is enter tainment! . To torture people or ani mals for fun or, indeed, for any reason, is a relic of the preoccupation and morality of primitive man. 1 .. ' , , . Peace on earth, the cessa tion of wars and the spiritual progress of mankind., will never evolve except that the hearts of man change and are reborn into a new era of mercy and justice to all living creatures. As long as cruelty, the colossal transgression, of the Law of God, is interwov en through the fabric of our lives,, bloodshed is inevitable. Our brutality to the animal world is reacting on us, and In turn makes us brutal to our fellow-man. The one place in the world. the church, where one would expect humaneness to be taught - it isn't. Show mercy and love to all the creatures of God, espe cially to the Weak and to the oppressed.-St, 'Francis of As sist. ' , ' . ' . . cldc Power and Light com pany was announced Friday by Franch C.
