There are few areas of the country which do not have a stake in their outcome. The major ones are: ; -Welding of the nation's largest rail system in assets by merger of the Pennsyl vania and the New York Cen tral. The merged system would have 22,000 miles of track stretching from Wash ington to Boston on the east coast and as far west as St. Louis and Chicago. ; -Affiliation of the Chesa peake and Ohio and the Balti more and Ohio railroads to form an 11.000-mile network from New York to Hampton Jjoads, Va., and westward to Cleveland, Cincinnati, St. Louis.and Chicago. Three-Way Merger ' -The three-way merger of the Norfolk and Western, Nic kel Plate and Wabash roads into a 7.400-mile system ex tending from Norfolk, Va., to Toledo and Chicago and on to Omaha, Neb. : -Creation of the longest Tail empire - 24,728 miles -by merger of three big west ern' lines the Great North ern, The Northern Pacific and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy: It would span 17 states from Chicago and St. Louis to Portland and Seattle. . -A two-way fight between the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific for the 1,200-mile Western Pacific for its "gate way" route from the Pacific Coast to Chicago. : The plight of the New Ha ven also is expected to im prove chances for enactment of at least some of the broad I transportation proposals Pres- Contract Awarded for County Trucks Crater Lake Motors. Med ford, has been awarded a con tract for two ton pickup trucks by the Jackson county court. The trucks will be used by the county road department. The cost was $3,875.42. The trucks will be 1963 models and will be delivered in late September or early October when new models arrive. The county engineer's of fice said the bid met the speci fications and recommended the court award the contract. Medford Woman Wins 'Coin Treasure Hunt' -. Ruth E.
