OREGON Isotope Studied Data Gained For Theory of Nuclei Eugene - A new radioactive isotope has been discovered by a University of Oregon nuclear physicist. Dr. Bernd Crasemann, as sociate professor of physics in the university, who spent the past year at Brookhaven Na tional laboratory, has pro duped a practical demonstra tion of a theory that is expect ed to give more definite in formation on the structure and energy of nuclei. He has synthesized rhenium 189, which until this time has only been postulated. : It has been known, Crase mann explained, that nuclei in a certain region of the periodic table, including the J'rare earths," are deformed and would look like a foot ball (W one could see such small objects -as atoms and nuclei), rather than like a beach ball as do the other nuclei. Sudden Chang : The region of deformed ;nuclei stops suddenly, with the isotopes of the metal osmium, and the ones that follow are heavier and round and smooth.. ... .- . 'i The nuclei in the "transl 'tion region," where the sud den change from deformed to Ixound shapes occurs, are especially interesting to physi cists, who believe that knowl edge 'of nuclear structure can .be gained by studying atoms 1n this region. Rhenium-189 ii such a nucleus or isotope. V In I960, Crasemann, with a U of O graduate assistant; James G. Pengra, conducted experiments using a cyclotron ;on the University of Califor nia campus at Berkeley1, They hoped to make rhenium-180 but were unsuccessful. Their calculations predicted that the Isotope would have a short life-time, between one and ten days. They also calculated that "the life of the isotope prob ably could not survive in the targets shipped from Berkeley Jo Eugene. . 1 During Crascmann's. 1981- i2 leave from ' Oregon, the elaborate equipment at Brook haven, one of the world's larg est centers for nuclear re search, was available and he resumed his attempts. Working with two Brook shaven physicists, G. T. Emery and W. R. Kane, Crasemann )nade further attempts to pro duce "odd'' rhenium-189. ' Months passed before the leam had developed tech niques for producing measur able amounts of the material. 'Mathod Derelopad ;. The best method they de . ,veloped consisted of placing tungsten foils in the interior of the cyclotron, where they were hit by intense beams of high -energy alpha particles (helium nuclei), some of which entered the tungsten atoms jmd stayed there, but kicked put a proton. The Intensely radioactive1 foils 'were re moved from the cyclotron and processed chemically. i The work . had . to be done partly by remote control, be hind thick' walls of lead, to protect the experi m e n t e r s from the strong radiation. Finally, the minute amounis of radioactive rhenium were electroplated on gold foils. mat in turn .had been plated nn copper supports. Informa tion was then aathereri before Ihe radioactive rhenium de cayed away. i One of the most inleresting aspects of the experiments, laid Crasemann, is that the results were Just as expected. They had already calculated the probable life expectancy ef the isotope and with what energy it would decay and these facts were borne out by the experiments. They now know, the physi cist continued, that the liew Isotope is a bit deformed, that ft both vibrates and rotates, nd that it appears to be fairlv hard.
