Walls Said Most Neglected Part Of Many Homes By DOROTHEA M. BROOKS New York- IUP1I -If you've the feeling your home needs something, but can't pinpoint quite what it is, try taking a good look at your walls. "You can't hide your walls or sweep them -under a rug. They, .can't -be . ignored be cause they are the most prom inent part of. a room-but. they are also the most neglected," according to Jerome Blonder, president of the Imperial Wallpaper' Mill, Inc., Cleve land. Blonder, whose firm manu factures eight lines of wall coverings in 1,600 patterns and styles, says wall covering today ranks as a top fashion item in the decorating me dium because of what it can do to alter size and appear ance. Can Change Look Color and pattern, for in stance, can change the look, size and shape of a room. Pattern is a "focalizer"-an eye-catcher, calling attention to the good points of a room and covering up the bad points. Wall covering can do much lo "furnish" a room that is light on furniture and acces sories. "Yet," Blonder said, "m any homeowners who would not think twice about spending a large sum for a single piece of furniture would pause before investing far less in the appearance of the walls around them." Imaginative use of wall paper can supply a new di mension, add texture, depth and individuality to your rooms-and paper of one sort or another can be used in any room. Research has turn ed up some unique qualities in wall coverings, such as stainproof papers, scrubbablc, vinyl-coated fabrics, fadeproof materials. A quality common lo most coverings, but one with which few are familiar, Blonder said, is generally ex cellent insulating value which helps to lock out cold in winter and heat in summer. Run Gamut With wallpapers running the gamut in design and color -everything from simple solids with perhaps a texture to elaborate brocades and whinisie.fl slyles for hallway, bath, kitchen or children's or play rooms, any taste can be satisfied. 1 Blonder suggested, however, I hat all rooms be color-coordinated, with patterns in ad- j joining areas falling within the same family hue or in complementary accent. Small overall patterns are good for small rooms with architectural defects, cover ing walls, ceiling and jutting areas. Larger patterns will do Ihe same for big rooms, and light, bright colors can do wonders for a dark room. (ligh ceilings can be lowered visually with paper. Murals, or scenics as they are called in the trade, add a new dimension in the popu lar price range with the in dustry copying higher priced "originals" much as the fash-1 ion industry does. Blonder., noted, ton, that the industry now is able to simulate the most expensive fabrics, in cluding silks and marble. 1 msm aus. trail sale i --'' I 9 r uai iiym w " (l'k w '1 ' ' t n Ut-li Mf-i f . 8 ft "' :-ft?r7i'I ffyftjr f'Jl "' jf j ft T i '?' . . . .pv, V. m "f '"""' tf'ft '' " 3ft. .AK ' . f'Jn ', I V ' ji5' t' ' Q 1 4 N.
