. New York,-VPfr-The 26,000
daily commuters on the New

breed, whose railroading

But a year ago this month
they suddenly found a . re

Northeast road had gained
national attention by going
bankrupt.
The--development came as
no surprise to the harried
riders of the line. But it

solutions to their own finan

:. ,'Currently, there are. eight
"control" applications and
four major railroad merger
cases pending before the ICC.
There are few areas of the
country which do not have a
stake in their outcome. The
major ones are:
; -Welding of the nation's
largest rail system in assets
by merger of the Pennsyl

would have 22,000 miles of
track stretching from Wash

Cleveland, Cincinnati, St.

Three-Way Merger '
-The three-way merger of
the Norfolk and Western, Nic

into a 7.400-mile system ex
tending from Norfolk, Va., to
Toledo and Chicago and on to
Omaha, Neb.
: -Creation of the longest
Tail empire - 24,728 miles -by
merger of three big west
ern' lines the Great North

the Chicago, Burlington and
Quincy: It would span 17
states from Chicago and St.
Louis to Portland and Seattle.
. -A two-way fight between
the Santa Fe and Southern
Pacific for the 1,200-mile

Coast to Chicago.
