NO WOMEN ALLOWED O Last week an executive visiting New York City asked me to guide him around the .Iloor of the New York Stock '' Exchange so he could see a mob scene portrayed countless times in photographs and movies come to life before his eyes and actually watch the members of the world's biggest ; stock exchange as they traded millions of dollars of securities , with a flick of their fingers. He got on the floor, but I didn't. I was barred at the . entrance to the spacious hall in the 11 Wall st. building re trading is carried on and was led to a public gallery crowded with children out of school for Easter holiday and ' doing the Wall Street sightseeing bit with their harried mothers. While he was gallantly escorted through the mob on the floor by a Stock Exchange employe I hastily corralled, I watched from a balcony and scribbled notes for a story I ' didn't expect to stumble to at this stage of Wall Street's ' history. - Why was I barred? Because I'm a female, that's why. Thar it no provision in the constitution of the NYSE " saying womeji can't visit the floor or be full-fledged mem bers of the exchange with all trading privileges. Nor is there any special rule or regulation barring women from visiting the floor or participating in all the NYSE's oper ations. " A member of the NYSE is allowed to bring guests to the ' tr.-ding floor during a regular business day except during 10-10:30 a.m. and 3-3:30 p.m. when activity usually is at a .. peak and guests might be a nuisance. That's what the rule says; it does not say the rule applies only when the guest is not a female. . "But if there's no constitutional provision or rule or regulation against women visiting the floor, why was I kept off?" I asked a NYSE vice presiuent after my friend had left. "It's tradition," said he in a voice interlarded with acute . discomfort. "It shouldn't have happened to you, though; If I'd . been here, I would have obtained the permission of the chairman of the board of the exchange for you to go through." "Bother the chairman of the board for this?" said I. "How silly. What if he was busy, as he should be?" 'i would have asked the vice chairman's okay." "And if he wasn't in or was busy too?" ... . j .. . " "We could have obtained permission from one of lh :r governors of the exchange present on the floor.' . "And if they were busy doing what they should be doing?'" "Oh," yelped the vp. "Of all people, you!" ' "Yes," yelped I right back. "Of all people, me! ' T Today, over 52 per cent of all the shareholders In the U.S. are women, and the margin by which we top the percentage of men shareholders is climbing steadily. Wom en are buying and selling billions of dollars of stocks a' t year on their own now, are studying the stock market as 1 never before, are investori in fact at well at in name. But " women can't vitit the NYSE floor without "a note from ' daddy." . , '" . Today, 1,787 women are registered representatives" ot NYSE member firms compared with 704 in 1955.-These worn- ' en must pass the same exams as men representatives, live up lo the Identical standards and compete on an equal basis for your slock account.
