April Birthdays To Be Celebrated By Townsend Club Ail Townsend club mem bers with birthday anniver saries in April will be hon ored at a potluck luncheon at the Pythian hall Wednes day; April 26, at 12 noon. Birthday cake will be served. At last week's meeting Finis L. Snodgrass, Portland, state Townsend club director, gave a report on progress of the national Townsend pen sion plan, now before Con gress. Delegates to represent the Medford club at the na tional convention at Grand Rapids, Mich,, were elected. Eighty-seven members and four guests were present. Miss Simp- ton, an honor roll student ac tive in many groups at Med ford High school, is a daugh ter of Mrs. L. L. Simpson, 801 King street, and the late Mr. Simpson. Winner Of Award Announced ' Miss Martha Simpson, sen ior at Medford High school, won first place in Oregon in the American Legion Auxili ary National President's scholarship contest. Her entry has been entered in competi tion on the national level for a $1,000 scholarship, accord ing to Mrs. ' Kathryn Stan' oliffe, education and scholar ship chairman for the auxiliary. .'. . ' As state winner,. Miss Simpson will receive a $300 scholarship which would go to the second place winner In Oregon if she receives the na tional , prize. The scholarship is awarded to daughters of deceased veterans for first year's college expense. ' . . Miss Simpson is the daugh ter of Mrs. L. L. Simpson, 801 King street, and the late Mr, Simpson. She is a four-year honor roll student, member of Torch honor society, uniform manager of the band, member of the senior symphony. Fu ture Business Leaders of America, La Tertulia Spanish club. International Relations League serving as a delegate to the state convention In Eugene in March, participat ed in Student Government day filling the position of public works director, has been named to the Academic Honors list and has a pen-pal in Alba, Italy, under the Town Affiliation program for Medford s sister city. . In previous years she has also participated in debate, varsity band, Boosters club and the Horizon club. She also assisted her parents in the operation of the Roxy Ra dio .network sponsored by the Southern Oregon Conser vation and Tree Farm associa tion. The local auxiliary has dis tributed copies of the book let. "Need a Lift." in all Jackson county high schools. The booklet is compiled an nually by the American Le gion Committee on education and scolarships for the pur pose to interest and assist all children to further their edu cation. The club hat . 25 Ashland school were preparing for the luau members. - Luncheon Honors Woman On Birthday Anniversary Eagle Point Mrs. Gertrude Haak, South B street, was hon ored with a surprise luncheon and party in honor of her 86th birthday anniversary Friday, April 14, at the home of Mrs. Ray Chamberlain, Brownboro road. Mrs. Haak was born in Grand Rapids, Mich., April 16, 1875, and came to Eagle Point in 1908 with 'her husband. The Haaks settled on the old Leverette orchard, or what is now the Vaughan place, and moved to their present loca tion in 1930. Mrs. Haak's hus band died in 1948. Two adop ted children of the couple live in California. Mrs. Haak's homesite includes about one half acre of ground, where she gardens. "I just, love to grow things and work with grow ing things," she said as she showed her many flowers, both outside and inside. She has a small vegetable garden for her own enjoyment and use. j Mrs. Haak, Mrs. Clarence Davies, Mrs. Wilfred Davies, and Mrs. Karl Von der Hellen started the first garden club in Eagle Point during World War II. The honored woman has been active in the community,- and during her - earlier days worked with the Eagle Point Grange and the Jackson County Pomona Grange. "The study of the Word and teaching it is my main and on ly interest now," Mrs. Haak stated. She says she can't re member exactly how many years she has taught the adult Bible class at the Eagle Point Community church. . "People are just wonder ful," she said, "someone is al ways willing to take me some place or help me out." She ad ded that she has good sight, good hearing and "hoped" she was good mentally also. "God has been wonderful to me," she declared.
