gress. Delegates to represent
the Medford club at the na
tional convention at Grand
Rapids, Mich,, were elected.
Eighty-seven members and
four guests were present. The

been named winner of a state
award given by the American
Legion auxiliary. Miss Simp-
ton, an honor roll student ac
tive in many groups at Med
ford High school, is a daugh
ter of Mrs. L. L. Simpson, 801
King street, and the late Mr.
Simpson.

Miss Mildred A. Gail,

Norman Gail, Gold Hill, is one
of eight Oregon residents who
have been awarded graduate
fellowships for language stu
dies from the U. b. Depart
ment of Health, Education and
Welfare. v.
Miss Gail, who is currently
a graduate student at Rad
cliffe college, Cambridge,
Mass., majoring in Russian,
will study Polish. The fellow
ship is for $3,575. She is now
in her second year of a three

Luncheon Honors Woman
On Birthday Anniversary
Eagle Point Mrs. Gertrude
Haak, South B street, was hon
ored with a surprise luncheon
and party in honor of her 86th
birthday anniversary Friday,
April 14, at the home of Mrs.
Ray Chamberlain, Brownboro
road. Mrs. Haak was born in
Grand Rapids, Mich., April 16,
1875, and came to Eagle Point
in 1908 with 'her husband.
The Haaks settled on the
old Leverette orchard, or what
is now the Vaughan place, and
moved to their present loca
tion in 1930. Mrs. Haak's hus
band died in 1948. Two adop
ted children of the couple live
in California. Mrs. Haak's
homesite includes about one
half acre of ground, where she
gardens. "I just, love to grow
things and work with grow
ing things," she said as she
showed her many flowers,
both outside and inside. She
has a small vegetable garden
for her own enjoyment and
use. j
Mrs. Haak, Mrs. Clarence
Davies, Mrs. Wilfred Davies,
and Mrs. Karl Von der Hellen
started the first garden club
in Eagle Point during World
War II. The honored woman
has been active in the community,-
and during her - earlier
days worked with the Eagle
Point Grange and the Jackson
County Pomona Grange.
"The study of the Word and
teaching it is my main and on
ly interest now," Mrs. Haak
stated. She says she can't re
member exactly how many
years she has taught the
adult Bible class at the Eagle
Point Community church.
. "People are just wonder
ful," she said, "someone is al
ways willing to take me some
place or help me out." She ad
ded that she has good sight,
good hearing and "hoped" she
was good mentally also. "God
has been wonderful to me,"
she declared.
