He will be accompanied by two students who will show some of their paintings. A talk will also be given by Mrs. -Robert W. Billingsley, chairman of fine arts for the First district. The meeting will be held at 1 p.m. at the Girls Commu nity club with Mrs. Clay M. Lee' and' Mrs. William E. Boone acting as hostesses. . Program on Alaska Slated For Arm Chair Travelers The Senior, Activity center arm chair travelers will take a "trip" up the Alcan high way and visit Alaska with Mrs. Edwin Gebhard Monday, April 24, at 1 p.m. Mrs. Geb hard showed colored slides of Mexico to the group last sum mer, and a large attendance is expected for her program. Last Monday Col. H. A. Meiring brought maps of the region in Thailand bordering both Laos and Cambodia and explained the present situa tion as he showed slides taken in the villages and jungles. Schools factories and modernization of the cities, were pictured along side continuing native customs and primitive living and tem ple ruins. The center was fill ed to capacity. Class Cancelled The Wednesday woodcarv- ing and clay sculpture class which has met weekly since the opening of the center has been cancelled for the present due to the sudden death of the teacher, Glenn VanWickle, a disabled veteran. The class members plan to attend his military funeral at the Camp White chapel, Monday, at 9:30 a.m. and the Senior Center orchestra will be in charge of music for the services. Mrs, Francis Barret will be solo ist, Edward Root, director, and Mrs. Maude Arnold, pianist. All other classes will fol low their usual schedule: oil painting, Tuesday and Satur day afternoons; Spanish, Mon day night and Thursday morn ing, and the regular practice of the orchestra, Thursday afternoons. Last week, a large audience was present to listen to them play and sing. The Fifty Plus Club Drama group attracts new members each week and beginning Wed nesday, April 28, the whole afternoon will be open for them. Monday and Wednesday mornings will be held open for committee meetings in preparation for Senior Citi zens Week festivities May Return ' Hornbrook Mr. and Mrs, jjwain namner returned on Tuesday from an eight-day visit in Bakersfield, Calif., where they visited Mrs. Ham ner's mother, Mrs. Hattie Hol land, and their daughter and her family, Mr. and Mrs. Galen Hebb and four daughters. Among those elected were (above, left to right) Mrs. Sherry Han son. Grants Pass, treasurer; Mrs. James Wil ford. Grants Pats, recording secretary; Mrs. W. B. McMonigal, Ashland, president; Mrs. Robert Weaver, Ashland, corresponding sec retary; and Mrs. LeRoy Hatcher, Medford, chaplain. Among other projects, the group has worked for funds to assist crippled chil dren during the past year. Sorority Council Elects Officers Grants Pass Chapters of Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority from Ashland, Medford and Grants Pass met in the Sequin room of Del Rogue hotel re cently for Southern Oregon District council meeting. Forty-six women attended. Mrs. W. B.. Monigal, Ash land, was elected president; Mrs L: E. Hayden, Grants Pass, vice-president; Mrs. James Wilford, Grants Pass, recording , secretary; Mrs. Sherry Hanson, Grants Pass, treasurer; Mrs. Robert Wea ver, Ashland, corresponding secretary; and Mrs. LeRoy Hatcher, Medford, chaplain. Members were met at the door by women of the hostess chapter, Alpha Iota, -who wore fresh camellia chapeaus. Mo biles of manzanita branches holding colorful butterflies decorated the room. "Spring Flowers" was the theme. During the business session It was reported that the coun cil had exceeded last year's donation to the Crippled Chil dren's hospital, Eugene, by $250. -' Mrs. James Gann Hostess for Club Central Point - The April meeting of Table Rock club was held at the home of Mrs. James Gann, Medford, with Mrs. Frank Meyers as co-host ess. . ' The First Presbyterian Women's association will be in charge of the luncheon Tuesday, April 25, at 12 noon. The event will be one-half hour earlier than usual so that the women may visit not only their own church, but go in caravan to Jacksonville, Phoenix and Westminster churches, to view their dis plays. . : The 81st birthday will be celebrated and fifty-year and charter members will be hon ored at a stated meeting of Reames chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Thursday, April 27. Club Makes Sale Plans Central Point Members of the Crater chapter, Grand mother Clubs of America, met at the home of Mrs. Frank Smith, 5203 Gebhard road, Monday, April 17, for a des sert luncheon. Mrs. Smith was assisted by Mrs. Alma Mai lory and Mrs. H. W. Brlttsan. The rooms were decorated with large bouquets of purple and white lilacs. The president, Mrs. Gilbert Brood presided at the business meeting. Plans were formulat ed for a bazzar and cooked foods sale to be held in May. Committees appointed were Mrs. O. T. Wilson, plants; Mrs. Frank Smith and Mrs. Homer Jefferies, cooked foods; Mrs.' Walter Gebhard and Mrs. Gilbert Brood, cloth ing; and Mrs. Charles Jantzer and Mrs. Royal Greenman, publicity. Mrs. H. H. Parsons was wel comed as a new member. Mrs Cordie Burns received the mystery package. The next meeting will - be May 15, at the home of Mrs Homer Jefferies, Scenic ave nue, with Mrs. Carl Hover and Mrs. J. H. Korner assist ing. ' State Director , To Visit Lodge Mrs. Clara B. Gertson Hillsboro, national commit- teewoman and state director of the Degree of Honor Pro tective association, will be In Medford to inspect the local lodge Monday, April 24. The meeting will be held at 8 p.m. at the Girls Commu nity club with members of Ashland and Grants Pass lodges invited to attend. Pupils of Caesar Muzzioli will entertain before the meeting and the Medford lodge glee club and drill team will perform during the meeting. At the last meeting Mrs. Helen Watson was initiated. Mrs. Harold Elliott presented her a red carnation and gave the flower charge. Mrs. Irl Groves served refreshments with camellias as decorations. Plans are under way for the district convention to be held In Medford May 8. Doctor To Speak For PTA Monday Dr. Robert Buck will speak for a meeting of Oak Grove Parent-Teacher associ-( ation at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 24, in the school cafe teria. Mrs. Roger Westerfleld, president, will be in charge of the meeting. Refreshments will be served prior to the business meeting by mothers of children In the second grades. Class Announces Monthly Session The monthly meeting of tne Golden Link class of First Baptist church will be held at the home of Mrs. J. H. Lichtenstern, 1011 West Tenth street, April 27. Des sert luncheon will be fol lowed by devotionals and a business session. Mrs. Jens Hermann, Sea side, worthy grand matron of the Grand Chapter of Oregon, Order of the Eastern Star, was the guest of honor at a combined district meeting of Reames chapter, Medford; Al pha chapter, Ashland; Adarel chapter, Jacksonville; and Nevita chapter. Central Point, held at the Medford Masonic temple April 13. Sharing hon ors with Mrs. Hermann was W. Morris Boughner, Med ford, worthy grand patron. More than 240 members and guests signed the register at this official visit of the worthy grand matron. Also honored were two past grand matrons, Mrs. Hal McNair, Ashland, and Miss Carlotta K. Wiseman, Grants Pass. Among the visitors were Mrs. John Wright, Myrtle Creek, associate grand conductress; Mrs. Francis Holt, Independ ence, grand Adah; Mrs. Clar- e n c e Bateman, Portland. grand Ruth; Mrs. William R. Since this was the last visit of Mrs. Hermann, an appro priate theme of "After the Ball is Over" was used for a waltz addendum which was presented by three couples from each of the four partic ipating chapters who were as sisted by the Trio from Ash land, Mrs. William Weber, Mrs. R. L. McKay, and Mrs. Martell Peters. Refreshments were served in the dining room which was decorated with pink camellias, pink stock, ivy and pink can dles. General chairmen for the evening were Mrs. H. E. Nulton and Mrs. Reese Alex ander. They were assisted by committees from the partic ipating valley chapters. Preceding the evening meet ing, Mrs. Hermann and Mr. Boughner were honored guests at a no-host dinner at Kims restaurant. A get-together buffet was held Friday eve ning at North's Chuck Wagon and was attended by approxi mately 40 of the visitors. The action was taken by the Opera association's board of directors upon a recom mendation of President Rob ert Watt Miller. Miller had set Thursday aa a deadline for settlement of a dispute between the associa tion and the American Guild of Musical Artists. He said the association could not afford the union's demands. Failure to obtain a contract, Miller said, has made it impossible to carry on rehearsals essential to next fall's .season, which would have been San Francisco's 39th.
