' the temperature dipping below the freezing point, it took a lot of grit and at least one pair of "longies" to endure a boat ride on Howard Prairie lake early Saturday morn- . ing. Only a handful of persons were on hand at the crack of dawn, but a large number of cars were noted coming in a little later. Oregon State rolled up a 6-3-1 record last season. Key to the Beavers' offense is Terry Baker, who sparked the team at tailback last year. Baker figures as the number one quarterback in the T. Don Kasso, another tail back, will be moved to a half back slot in the T. In his six years at Oregon State, Prothro has a 36-21-2 record. NightTrapsfooot On Wednesday Medford Gun club will hold a night trapshoot on Wednes day, April 26. . It will be a 50 bird event, 25 of 16 yards and 25 of han dicap with two classes in 16 yard shooting. Practice targets also will be offered. There will be miss and out and backer up con ' tention. ; Traps will open at 7 pjn. Anglers Do Well Sn Lakes of Area As Season Opens Bank fishermen-reportedly had best luck yesterday at three lakes of the area as gen eral trout angling season opened in Oregon. . Lots of limits were report ed at Squaw lakes, Willow lake and Howard Prairie lake as anglers braved snow, wet and cold. Limits of eastern brook and rainbow trout were reported taken Saturday from the up per Rogue river, Buck creek and the south fork of Little Butte creek. At Prospect dam the fish were larger, accord ing to L. E. Clevenger but anglers were not getting lim its. He indicated that the up per Rogue at Foster creek did not produce much because the Sports Bulletin Boston - (UPD-Fancy Paul Pender, known better for his boxing artistry, knocked down Carmen Basilio for the first two limes in the hatchet-faced veteran's 13 year career last night and retained his share of the world middleweight title with a unanimous 15-round decision. Pender, making his third defense of the title, sent the 34-year-old former onion farmer from Chittenango, N.Y., to the canvas in the 13th and 15th rounds. Central water was high and somewhat discolored. Angling was said to be ex cellent with numerous limits at Howard Prairie where an estimated 400 fishermen turn ed out for the season opening. State policemen reported checking four men with 20 fish among them, all over 12 inches. Most of the fish were 15 inches or longer and one was 22 inches. Not Much Problem Another reported limits with catches up to 17 inches and 8 large percentage of big fish. Taking limits of fish from the bank at Willow lake was said to be not much of a prob lem early in the day yester day. Trout were ' running seven to nine inches. Bank fishermen outnumbered those in boats In the early morning. Fishing was said to be good at Squaw lakes with catches running big in the lower lake. Trout were reported up to 15 inches. An estimated 100 boats were on the lower lake but there were more fisher men on the bank. The road to the lake was said to be good yesterday but getting muddy and it was thought it might be rough today. Efforts to get a report on anglers' luck at Fish , lake were unsuccessful. Telephone lines were down because of tl.e snow storm. Skills in Water To Be Shown At Sportsfair YMCA members will dem onstrate a number of tech niques during the Crater Lions Club Sportsfair and Garden show here . on May 5, 6 and 7. Mrs. Lanell Wilkes, in charge of Sportsfair activities, said skills will include swim ming instruction, water safe ty and life saving, synchron ized swimming or water bal let and trampoline. Dave Curzon will demon strate how . basic swimming skills - are taught at the YMCA. He will use Y young sters who are actually learn ing the techniques. Dr. Wil liam Roberts and Dutch Far fan will be in charge of the water safety presentation. The program will include wa ter survival, endurance and stunts. Patterns to Music Mrs. Wilkes will direct the synchronized swimming, ryth mic experience through swim ming movements. There will be stunts and patterns to music. Ted Lyons will have charge of showing basic and advanced trampoline skills. The Y will make use of a 28-feet in diameter pool con structed for the Sportsfair by Medford Construction com pany just outside the tent area. Bleachers will be avail able. The fair will be at the Med ford armory. Plans Made For Legion Baseballers ' Two teams from Klamath Falls and one : each from Medford and Central Point will make up the southern di vision of Area 4 this season in American Legion junior baseball. Division commissioner Bill Askwith of Cheney Forest Products, which sponsors the Central Point team, reported that his club and Medford will play their home tilts at the Veterans Administration field at White City. The park at the fair grounds which Askwith and the Cheney firm have kept up for numerous seasons, has been taken over again by the county. League play will start on Tuesday, June 6, with the CP Cheney Studs playing one Klamath Falls team at White City. Medford will engage the other Klamath team on the following night at the same location. Central Point will have a non-league game on May 28 with one of the KF clubs. Hatfield Retires Askwith will handle the CP team. Cliff McLean re portedly will coach Medford. Klamath , mentors will be Al Keck and John Paxton. Hi Hatfield is retiring after many seasons of baseball management at Klamath Falls. His club reached the Legion national tournament last year by taking state and regional diadems. Grants Pass will not have a Legion team this year. It is reported that not enough sponsors could be obtained in the Climate city. Teams of the circuit are ex pected to be much stronger this year because of the ma jor rule change upplng the age limit. Any boy whose date of birth was on or after Jan. 1, 1943, is eligible.
