DFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MED FORD, ORE WEDNESDAY, APRIL 5, 1961 1 8th, 1 Stli Centuries With Hidarn in New Blended Furniture A blending and coordina tion of traditional 18th and 19th century designs with the simple modern lines of con temporary fashions, keynotes the spring '61 showings of fur niture and home furnishings. . , Detailing ol traditional piec es has become more simple, less ornate while "modern" has become less austere look ing and has taken on more en hancing details. This kinship of traditional with modern, light with dark woods, conventional with dar ing color-makes home decor a real challenge for the imag inative homemaker. , ."Now, the only rule one needs to remember is choose pieces which suit a specific purpose and please the eye," suggests the Home Furnish ings Industry Committee. Luxurious Modern Modern furniture was never more versatile and functional nor richer in appearance than the new groups. Chairs, un believably comfortable are molded of plywood or fiber glass and plastic. Soft easy seating is achieved, with mold ed foam rubber. Upholstered and tufted in velvet . with lightly scaled sculptured wood arms and legs, these chairs seem to re late to some French Empire designs. An extreme merger of traditional forms and mod ern techniques, it is indica tive, however, of other inter esting new developments. Unfettered by traditions, handsome science-age mater ials and techniques contribute to modern furniture. Door fronts of a china cabinet may be of molded, color impregna ted, translucent plastic. Draw er and cabinet pulls of brass and enamel, or thin plywood molded to leaf form may ac cent sleek facades. Tradiiional Styles Traditional late 18th, or early 19th century groups are probably, more important in this year's market than they have been for many years. In these, mahogany may be a rich dark brown, or a warm mellow medium tone. (Never a red cast.) Frequently too, the hand some pattern of cherry is tint ed to one of these deeper tones. Brass hardware boldly accents cabinets, drawer fronts and is used as small railings on the back of side boards. - While the 19th Century is famous for its rococo Victor- ; lilt is hi. , f s i ii t" I ' si v n n i ! . .--U DECORATIVE Functional and decorative modular units are highly fashionable for today s smaller home. These pieces are extremely versatile and point up to the taller, more slender look of accesssory storage and utility units. The chests, cabinets and hutches in the collection are Italian- inspired white finishes with delicate gold stripings. The Forum Collection" by David M. Lea ian furniture, the adaptions made in the new collections have a clean trimness by com parison. Queen Anne Colonial Early American furniture rates tops In high quality lines as well as in budget groups. Adaptions from the Queen Anne era are new. The grace fully curved leg with its little rounded foot; the arched top of tall cabinets and door pan els and other fine details, re moves some of the robust homespun feeling of previous collections. O r i g 1 n a lly Queen Anne furniture was often made of walnut. Many of the new groups are cherry, maple or pine, finished in the well lik ed lighter "carmel tones." Out standing is a group of all ma hogany in light, almost honey, tone.. Typical too, of the Queen Anne era are pieces in some what larger scale than prev iously. An over sized dining chair for the head of the fam ily, a wing chair for two, practical sized end and lamp tables are outstanding. Provincial in Colors French provincial has tak en to gay and soft colored lacquers. Complete bedroom groups are often pale blue, light grey, or soft pink. Brighter tones on cabinets, buffets and dining chairs ac cent the brown fruit wood finishes. Although the essence or spirit of the antique is main tained, the simple elegance modern American women ap preciate is dominant. A look of youthful slender ness is the end result achiev ed by low set waistlines, un belted princess lines, and by gently shaped and elongated bodices. Waistlines have simple def initions marked by sashes and leather belts. Shorter than ever is the word for hemlines. Popular length is one inch below the knee, but not higher. Full Shirts Controlled full shirts shape themselves into narrowed hemlines with pouf effects, flounces and godets. Intricate folds, pleats and panels create an easy look of grace by falling naturally into place for fullness or slender shaping. For the first time in many years, designers are pointing up the importance of the bias cut which fluidly molds diag onal folds, shapes up flatter ing cowls and gives freedom of movement without cling ing to slender skirt shapes.
