Britons (men, that is) stage a fashion revolt. This year will be remem bered as the year the British male finally shook off the last vestiges of war - time dress styles. All categories of male wear will be highlighted with more colorful and light weighted clothes. Some of the "revolu tion" details he's gladly drop ping are belted rain and top coats, heavily padded shoul ders, ample seat pants and dark color suits for lighter. brighter colored ones. He's trading those "hangovers" for knee length "shorty" rain and top coats, cuffless tapered pants, brightly colored vests and innovations In formal dress wear to give the tradi tional British look a distinc tive American accent. Bowling Fashions Develop With Popularity Rise Baseball had. better watch out, because there's a sport that's rapidly rising toward the number one sport of Amer ica's favorite sports. It's bolw ingt About 26 million people in the United States flocked to the lanes last year, and new fans are made every day. One of the biggest reasons for this increase is the change in the character of Bowling Centers. Not too many years ago these were called Bowl ing Alleys, and the change of name is not the only change. ' Bowling centers today are becoming lavish entertain ment headquarters, complete with cocktail lounges, bowling boutiques, - restaurants, art galleries and baby care nur series. Attracts Women - Bowling, being a sport the entire family can enjoy, has attracted many women . .; . and when women take up a sport, they must have the proper (smart) clothing. Tra ditionally, bowling outfits take their style clue from the need for freedom of action. But, tradition has been brok en! . . Culottes get big pay with abstrainters reasoning that they are awkward, but the abstralners are few. Tunics over tights or slim jims are also popular as they are both attractive and, comfortable. For those who refuse to ap pear in slacks, skirts with matching tops take on a new look with gores that are def inite, rather than having the look that they are trying to conceal themselves! One ex ample Is a skirt with multi colored insets that show when the skirt flares out. UNDERCOVER SILKS Women who love the luxur ious feel -of silk against their skin, will be delighted with the many ways in which these elegant fabrics are being used in foundations this spring. Bras, girdles and corselets are featuring it in many guises, ranging from, silk-covered elastics to lush silk crepe de chine. Hats Move To Side; Handbags Are Long; Gloves for Season Hats wiU still be high, but this season the real Interest moves to the side. In the manner of the Twen ties and Thirties, the brim will be flipped up on the side, or pulled down close to one cheek with a touch of eye- stopping trim at that point. The little hats take to the side too, but moving to the tilt just ever so slightly from the top of the head. These are truly "little hats," not even large enough . to cover the crown. , ; In between in size are the new semi-bowl styles, the cloches, turbans, bretons, sail ors and toques. Also promi nent are small -crown hats with enormous brims. . , Every color will be seen In spring millinery, with lilac and off-white slated for a big appearance.- Trims are most often color-contrasted and grosgraln has bloomed along with flowers, veiling and oth er ribbons for the season. Textured straw is some thing very different in new millinery, due to the treat ment hat designers have given it. In many styles it creates a decided three-dimensional ef fect. Felt, velvet and veil pouffs are all excitingly used too. ' ; ''s. - Handbags Long . As hats have grown high handbags have grown long. The most forward looking shape is the envelope, which has been streamlined to zoom up to 20 inches. Some styles have handles, but most are meant to be carried under the arm. Other handbags will be soft In silhouette, similar to previ ous seasons. Newness come from fabrics and trim. Burlap. homespun, friezes and tapes tries . . . grained and mottled leathers ... these are the keys to ai up-to-the-minute look, Spring's new fashions call for belts that do a "trim-up' job. The self-belt, look Is sel dom seen. And new belts an swer the call to colors (and decorative touches). Chains, dangles, bows, drapes . stripes,' prints, tone-on-tones . colors from the entire British Accent Is Seen in Spring's Fashion for Men If sportswear for Spring, 1961 could speak, reports the American Institute of Men's and Boys' Wear, it would have a decided British accent. From coats and slacks to shirts and walk shorts, the word is Britlsh-but with an obvious American flavor. Sport jeckets,' for instance. Include a modified British hacking style-waistlines, a bit accented, shoulders natural, with a slight flare-out at the base and vents at the side or in the center. Stronger patterns and bold er colors are to be found in Ivy type sport coats, while the Continentals have edged closer than ever to the more conservative Trans-American Design. Slim Silhouette Slacks continue in the slim silhouette so familiar in recent seasons, with convenient self- supporting waistband in great er evidence than ever. Seersucker, a definite Brit ish favorite, will have wider acceptance in casual sulti. sport jackets as well as in slacks, walk shorts and sport shirts-many are blessed with wash-wear properties. Knitted sport shirts are among the- leaders for spring- wear this season, while in cut-and-sewn types for sports wear, pullovers will reach great popularity. Returning to favor are the so-called jacket shirts which, in many cases, are designed for wear with walk shorts, slacks and swim ming trunks, in the country or at the beach. A new note in knitted shirts has been intro duced with such touches as sweater-designs, and fresh de tailing around collars and shoulders. -Summerweights , '. Speaking of sweaters, they now come in summerweights In a profusion of styles, in cluding cardigans and pullov ers. Virtually all the casual wear and leisure wear for spring-summer 1961, point up stripes in a tremendous varie ty.' New interpretations of the batik pattern, the selection of beachwear styles and ideas may possibly be the biggest ever. There's also a new em phasis on seersucker as a sportswear fashion fabric. Carefree, relaxed and British-accented these sum up the spring and summer sports wear picture for 1961. HERE TO STAY Minimus are here to stay, because of their wonderful versatility and comfortable ness! They serve as a duster, hcuiscclress or patio lounger, all-in-one. Spring versions of the muumuu are again bril liant with exotic Hawaiian flower prints and often are carbon-copied in a smaller size for daughter.
