MONDAY, DECEMBER 12, 1960 Poor Losers Many Entries, Large Attendance A unique idea in art shows was tried in the valley yes terday, and the idea caught on. The first annual Poor Los ers show was held in the Med ford hotel with works enter ed by 32 persons of various ages. They included artists, student artists, those who paint for fun and recreation and those who just wanted to support the venture. The Poor Losers show was the brain child of Robertson E. Collins, who enlisted the aid of James Ragland in stag ing the event. . The men, both devoted members of Southern Oregon Art association, decided that such a show would be a lot of fun - which it was - would Mrs. Dwight Eisenhower and Mrs. John F. Kennedy paused in the Souin C.cuncU after the first lady took the future first lady on a surprise tour of the executive mansion Friday. Mrs. Kennedy went to the White House within two hours after the left Georgetown hospital with her Infant son. You Will Love the HOLIDAY MATERNITY FASHIONS At LaPointe's Art Show Attracts serve to call attention to the current first area competition show at Rogue gallery, a juried exhibit, and would earn money to support Rogue gal lery, which it did. From entry and voting fees, enough was netted to bring a first-class show to Rogue gallery at some future date, they reported to day. There were judges for yes terday's show, too, three five-year-old boys. Interestingly enough, these small boys, Scott Danielson, Brent Bos worth and Todd Ragland, chose as their favorite of the large number of entries an abstraction painted by Victo ria St a ley of Eagle Point. All men of the Phoenix Presbyterian church choir have been asked to meet Wed nesday at the Phoenix First Presbyterian church from 6 to 7 p.m. and all choir members from 8 to 0 p.m. Thursday, Phoenix First P ybtcrian church Woman's association will meet from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church A sess'on meeting will be held at 7 p.m. the same day in the church sidcred their choice signifi cant, since there were many landscapes, flower pictures and other works which one might have thought small boys would have preferred. Those attending the show voted for their favorite works, and Robert Bosworth, father of Brent, won this vote. The three small judges also selected "the one they hated most" and this dubious honor went to a tiny portrait by "Benjo," otherwise known as Ben Trowbridge Jr., chairman of Rogue Gallery's exhibition committee. Others who entered works in the show were Marti Daw kins, Ashland; Jean Danielson, Harry Danielson, Claire M. Rickard, Helen Donkcr, "Nclla," Dorothy Monroe, Co rinne Bosworth, Ruby Rals ton, Afton Carter, Charles Walker, Lou F. Olson, Michel Barrett, D. M. Staley, Cynthia Lord, Wanda Williams, Z. Van Valzah; Ogden Kellogg, Caro line Storey, Harriett Speare, "Dili Dali", Kathleen Bash, Bren H. Starcher, Makiko Doi, Ashland, Elizabeth Sheffield, Rogue River; Alice Rutter, Charles Forrester, Ashland, and the two sponsors. Some of the entries which attracted the most attention had been made especially for the show and provided an out let for the creators' sense of humor and imagination. One of these, improvised from wire and paper by "Dila Dali' had a paragraph-long title and another, a sculpture made from egg shells, was entitled The Naked and the Dead and the medium was listed as "processed calcium. Charles Forrester, Ashland, whose busts of Shakespearean actors are displayed in the Ashland Shakespearean Festi val theater, and who made play sculpture for the Med ford city parks, entered an exceedingly large 'Ifun" work so large it had to be dis played on the sidewalk outside the "Gallery de Rejection." Entitled "Fowl," Forrester had used a barrel for the bird's body, rough boards for the legs, wings and neck and the head, was a bunch of mistletoe. Of this, one viewer exclaimed, "You know, it really has feeling." Most of the entries, how ever, were the honest efforts of men and women interested in various phases of art, and a number of them were sold during the afternoon. 1 The Messrs. Collins and Ragland were urged to make the show an annual event and a number of the artists . frankly said they enjoyed entering their ef forts in this type of show whereas they could never summon up enougli courage to enter a serious show. O.S. New Examplar Chapter Formed The new Exemplar chapter of Beta Sigma Phi held its first meeting at the home of Mrs. Walter Larsen December 5. This is the second Exem plar chapter in Medford to be formed. Election of officers was held, with Mrs. Larsen named president. December 18. Mr. Levine is on the resi dent art faculty of Oregon State college now in his sev enth year of teaching at that institution. He has also taught at the University of Oregon and at the University of New Mexico where he received both his under-graduate and graduate degrees. Further study at the Faculte des Let- tre-, University of Toulouse in Fince. The artist's works have been widely exhibited in both this country and abroad. These exhibitions include numerous one-man shows in various gal leries and museums such as the Addison Gallery, of Amer ican Art, Brooklyn Museum. New Mexico Museum of Art, Seattle Art Museum, San Francisco Museum of Art, and Portland Art Museum. In addtion to having his paintings in many private col lections, Mr. Levine has won prizes for his prints and paint ings. The exhibit is open to the public during school hours and on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings from 1 until 9 in Britt center, room 117. Santa Visits Ashland Club Ashland-Santa Claus made an unscheduled personal ap pearance In Ashland Wednes day night when he visited Wesley House just as members of the Business and Profes sional Women were finishing their Christmas refreshments From his well-filled pack he distributed gifts to each of me zt) club members and guests before hurrying back to "finish up" at his toy shop before the Big Night arrives. Hostesses for the annual party were executive board members who served refresh ments from a candlelit tree centered table. A blazing log in the fireplace and candles on the mantle and in the windows gave a festive air to the eve ning's entertainment. A group of Christmas duets, sung by Barbara Ward and Karen Baker of Ashland Junior High school, and ac companied at the piano by Mrs. Adelaide Spencer, key noted the holiday program. Charades and games were enjoyed during the rest of the evening and no business ses sion was conducted. Mrs. Louise Myers and Mrs. Hodie Jacobs, president and vice president of the club, were in charge of the Christmas pro gram. , Events Christmas arrangements which house tour planned by Eagle will be served at the Grange Decorations ingenuity, the Christmas cards you receive can be used to create a sparkling holiday at mosphere in your home. Or Coffee Table If you happen to have a glass top coffee table, Christ mas cards held under the glass by cellophane tape will pic ture a winter wonderland. The same cheerful effect may be gained by using the mirror in your living room. Here's another thought-lry starting a parade of Christmas cards across your window-sill for passers-by to see. Pick out a diminutive Santa in his reindeer-drawn sleigh to lead the way. Familiar Christmas symbols such as church bells, glowing candles, and small groups singing Christmas carols are very appropriate in these window parades. As a special touch, place several of the most beautiful Christmas cards you recelve- those with religious scenes of the Christ Child or the Ma donna - in an appropriate pic ture frame, It's a wonderful way to keep the spirit of Christmas in your home all year long. Add-a-Card You can also develop an "add - a - card" Christmas art exhibit. Secure some of the new shiny black electrical ad hesive tape. Affix lengths of this tape to a molding .or to the valance of a Venetian blind, with the adhesive side turned out, and then, as your Christmas cards arrive you can quickly mount them on the black tape so that even tually you'll have several rows of cards on display. To hold the mounted cards in place you can affix the tape to the floor or to the bottom of the Venetian blind. For final touches, of course, you'll always want to have lots of cards on the mantlcpiece or attractively ar ranged on the piano, and in other locations around the liv ing room. 1 Tinted Coconut Tinted coconut is ideal for decorating candies, cookies and cakes. Place 1 teaspoon milk or water in a bowl; add a few drops of vegetable coloring and mix well. Add Hi cups shredded coconut and toss with fork until coco nut is tinted through. I I II II uuonoias Christmas Luncheon Ashland - Ashland Garden club members met Monday in the Women's Civic clubhouse to complete their annual holi day decorations and to cele brate the Christmas season with their customary luncheon and gift exchange. Featured along with tradi tional wreaths and swags of holly and evergreen were this year's most popular items, metal mesh plaques and dried arrangements. Copper spray gave the final touch of un usual decoration. The day's guest speaker, Mrs. Audrey Sims of Medford, demonstrated a wide variety of arrangements, making use of such unorthodox materials as tin cans, egg cartons, flash bulbs and brush bristles. She fashioned table trees from feathers and chenille, flocked toothpicks, pink net, styro foam and endless glitter. Work was suspended at noon while the club members enjoyed a luncheon and gift exchange around their lighted tree. Patients at the mental hospital in Salem were also remembered with Christmas presents. Mrs. Clarence Mathes con ducted a short business meet ing and Mrs. Robert Fremd gave the month's horticultural tips. Christmas was In the air at a benefit card party given by the Medford branch, Amer ican Association of University Women, Wednesday night at the Red Cross building. Proceeds from the party were applied to the branch's 51,130 quota for their national organization's new headquar ters building in Washington, D.C. A majority of the quota has already been raised by the local branch from various fund-raising projects. The new building was authorized at the 1957 convention in Boston with cost estimated at $1,500, 000. Based on a membership of about 145,000 women, per captla quota was $10, to be raised preferably by volun tary contributions rather than by assessment. Although no time limit was set, association leaders hoped the money could be raised in about three years. The build ing is known as the American Association of University Women's Educational Founda tion Center. The new center will be ded icated at the next national AAUW convention June 19 to 23, 1961, in Washington, D.C. The conventions meet bien nially. The Educational Foundation handles all research activities of AAUW, the management of the numerous fellowship funds and international grants and operates the Center. The object of the Foundat' n is to enable the organization to re ceive large gifts or grants from other Foundations or in dividuals which would be tax exempt to carry out research projects and then publish the findings. At the recent card party travel posters, to each of which was added "Merry Christmas" in the language of the country illustrated, dec orated the walls along with swags and medallions of me tallic paper in many colors, Mrs. George Johns and Mrs. William McLaren were co- chairmen for the party. Table cloths were made by a com mittee headed by Mrs. Ver non Gebhard. Mrs. Jack W, Love made the centerpieces, and Mrs. Robert K. Hood was in charge of the posters.
