T&yne ENDS WEDNESDAY I Cinemascope Women Jailed in Holdup Attempt Portland -(VJPU Two women dressed in men's clothing were jailed early Sunday aft er an attempt to hold up the City Grocery store here had failed. Police said store owner John Vlahos was struck with an 18-inch piece of rubber hose with wood in one end. He was not badly hurt. Vlahos told police that he grabbed a revolver he keeps behind the counter and held the suspects until officers ar rived. Held were Emily Ann Gal loway, 28, and Loretta A. Lindaey, 21. Scholarship Plan Receives Approval Salem - (UPD - An expanded state scholarship plan, calling for 50 scholarships fyorth $500 each a year for any col lege or university in Oregon, has been approved by the State Scholarship committee. The commission will recom mend the program to the 1961 legislature. It follows a similar propo sal by Gov. Mark Hatfield. The commission agreed with Hatfield but favored changing the law to lift restrictions that scholarships would be used only at state-owned schools. Bus Driver Robbed Of Cash and Tokens Portland - (UPD - A masked bandit robbed a Rose City Transit bus driver of $65 in cash and $18 worth of tokens early today. Police said driver James Baldino was counting his change while the bus was parked on Southwest Taylor's Ferry rd. when the holdup occurred. DUNLAP Funeral services for Wil liam Kenneth Dunlap, 54, who died at his residence at Butte Falls Star route, Eagle Point, Friday, will be held at the Perl Funeral home Tuesday at 1 p.m. with Dr. George Roseberry of the First Meth odist church officiating. Com mittal will be in the Butte Falls cemetery. Mr. Dunlap was born Feb. 27, 1906, in Cripple Creek, Colo., and had been a resident of this area for 35 years. He was a member of the World of Tomorrow Radio Church of God. He was a logger, and was educated in Weiser, Idaho. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mildred Dunlap, Butte Falls; two sons, Kenneth Ray Dunlap, Central Point, and Donald K. Dunlap, Jackson ville; one sister, Florence Han son, Medford; one brother, John Kent, Salt Lake City, Utah, and six grandchildren. One son, William Joe Dunlap, preceded him in death in 1957. Pall bearers will be Cliff McCaslin, Jess Rogers, Jim Vargo, Frank Smith, Earl Har nish and Alva Webster. RUBY VIOLET BAIRD Ashland-Ruby Violet Baird, 44, of 531 Fairview st., Ash land, died Dec. 11 at her resi dence. She was born Jan. 13, 1916, at Peterville, Calif. She had lived in Ashland for the past 18 months mov ing here from Mt. Shasta, Calif. Survivors include her hus band, John Baird, Ashland; her mother, Mrs. Ellen Bar nard, Mt. Shasta; two broth ers, Orville Addington, Wood- enville, Wash., and Leo Bar nard, Livermore, Calif., and one sister, Cleo Aydtt, Chico, Calif. Funeral services will be held later this week in Mt. Shasta. The body will lie in state at the Litwiller's Moun tain View chapel, Ashland, from 7 to 9 o'clock tonight. JAMES ARNOLD MUBPHY Funeral services for James Arnold Murphy, 44, of White City, who died Saturday eve ning from injuries received in an automobile accident Fri day, will be held at the White City chapel at 9:30 a.m. Tues day. Arnold grad uated from Eagle Point High school in 1960. Both men will return to the North Island Air Force base in San Diego lor five month indoctrination period. Caries is from Hawaii and is his first trip to the mainland. Weather Sportsmen's Group Urges Ban on Dams Spokane - (UPD - The Wash ington State Sports men's Council Sunday adopted a resolution urging federal leg islation to prohibit construc tion of any dams on the Sal mon river of Idaho. The resolution also urged limiting the head of any dam on the Snake river below the mouth of the Salmon to 100 feet. The group refused to adopt proposal by the Spokane delcgat'-m that the fishing season in Spokane, Stevens and Pend Oreille counties open in January instead of April. ! The day marks the begin ning of another annual drive to control the invasion of flocks of starlings Into Ore gon - a drive which last year eliminated 1,257,000 of the birds. In addition to guns, the de vices used to kill the birds in clude lights that lure the ster lings into trap nets, where they are gassed. Poisoned po tato chips also are used. The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service will aid state officials in their antl-starling effort. More than a million of the de structive birds are expected to arrive in the state' in the com ing month, threatening holly and foliage. ''Veteran Loan Bonds Get Authorization Salem-OIPll-The Oregon Vet erans' Affairs department Saturday was authorized by its advisory committee to is sue $30 million in slate farm and home loan bonds. The bond sale will be made m January and will be the first of bonds approved by the voters in the Nov. 8 election. Department Director H. C. Saalfeld said $13 million worth of the bonds will be used for a backlog of 1,400 veteran loan applications. Benton To Back Senator Corbett Corvallis-IUPD-The Benton County Democratic Central committee has voted to give its full support to State Sen. Alfred Corbett (D-Portland) in his battle for the Senate presidency. State Sen. Harry Boivin (D-Klamath Falls) has laid claim to 17 votes for president of the 30-man body. He claims nine Republican votes. Oscar Kendall, chairman of the Benton county group, said the committee also voted to support, State Sen. Robert Straub (D-Eugene) Democra tic State chairman, a backer of Corbett.
