I'm working now on a sys tem recommended by a pro fessor at the University of Southern California. First, he says, you should listen for the major topic. Sec ond, listen for the subtopics. "Then you don't have to listen to all the small talk in between," he points out. "These are filler words put there so we can digest what's been said." That sounds reasonable enough, but I've found out that it can be quite dangerous in actual practice. I tried it the other evening when my. wife was telling me about the throw rugs. The next day when I got home there were three small rugs on the floor. They were bright orange, the color of Halloween. "What's all this?" I said. "Orange rugs?"
