Tommy Manville, who has

wife is going to have a mil-,

father for the first time," the

Manville, who married two
of his wives twice, said his
11th wife, Christina, is ex
pecting in June.
The child automatically will
inherit a $1 million trust fund

Every book written on how
to be popular insists that
being a good listener is vital.
I'm working now on a sys
tem recommended by a pro
fessor at the University of
Southern California.
First, he says, you should
listen for the major topic. Sec
ond, listen for the subtopics.
"Then you don't have to
listen to all the small talk in
between," he points out.
"These are filler words put
there so we can digest what's
been said."
That sounds reasonable
enough, but I've found out
that it can be quite dangerous
in actual practice.
I tried it the other evening
when my. wife was telling me
about the throw rugs.
"The carpet's down to the
threats in front of the sofa
where we used to have the
coffee table," she said. It's
what she says she said anyway.

topic?" I inquired.
"What are you talking
about?"
"I want to know," I ex
plained, "what was your
major topic. You must have

to anybody," she sighed.
"That's what I am doing,"
I explained. "I'm trying to
listen selectively. I don't want
to be concentrating on a lot of
filler and miss a major topic,
you see?
"Leaving out the filler," I
said, "your major topic was
that loo many people are us
ing our bathroom and we need
a new coffee table."
She nodded. "Right," she
said.
The next day when I got
home there were three small
rugs on the floor. They were
bright orange, the color of
Halloween.
"What's all this?" I said.
"Orange rugs?"
"I told you last night," she
explained. "I said I was going
downtown and charge three
new orange throw rugs."
"I didn't hear anything like
that," I said.
