Intimate Fall Fashion Displays Two Faces Intimate fashion for fall has two faces. One may love the fireside and the other prefer the field, but both get together to produce this year's array of loungewear and lingerie. Fireside elegance is express ed in lilac, rose, raspberry and other worm shades. Night gowns and slips of nylon, satin and other elegant fabrics are molded to an easy, flow ing, princess silhouette. Bust line, waistline and hipline are cut to cling and biased skirts may open to a full circular hem. The effect is entirely feminine! The crisp, outdoor autumn look also answers the roll call. Gold and green leave the trees to color sleepwear, some' times mixing witl paisley, leopard or zebra prints. This effect is especially at tuned to tunics and culottes. The tunic is an overblouse which may come anywhere be tween the knee and upper thigh. It can be belted over trim looking pajama slacks, hang loose and easy in a baby Two Good Ways To SAVE! Masculine Hats Said Trim, Tangy The "top" story for fall I960 is that masculine head wear has a trim and tangy way about it. . Contributing strongly to this is the fact that brims are again narrower, having come down to only lynch es In the most extreme cases. Even when brims are closer to moderate widths, many of the hats for the fall season have a small look thanks to deep ly curled brims and tapered crowns. A handsome expression of the fall trend in hats is the new "Roma" model which features a slightly higher crown with a close narrow crease, small front dents, and a deep mushroom snap to the 1 inch brim. The finish is close clipped silk-type. Although the top - volume shades will still be steel grays and charcoal, there will be many fresh Ideas - olives, golds, bronze, blacks and black-olives. Casual and sports hats -tyroleans, cloth hats, casual crushers, tweeds - are getting more Important each season. One factor here may very well be the fact that college men and young men In gen eral are now wearing more hats, and they appear to fa vor cloth hats in plaids, checks, solids and tweedy fab rics, velour tyroleans, raw edge and welt full-weights, a wide variety of caps, as well as the new neat shapes for dressy wear. Evidence Shows Radioactivity Changes Plumage London - (Science Service) - Scientists working In the de partment of zoology and com parative anatomy of St. Bar tholomew's Hospital Medical college here have found strong evidence that birds which have been arriving in Britain with strange plumage have had the colors of their feathers changed by flying through radioactive clouds. The work has been carried out by Dr. Brian Lofts, aided by Dr. A. J. Marshall, head of the department, and by Prof. J. Rotblat, head of the medical college's department of physics. It was started when a doctor and amateur ornithologist in south east England found a strange bird in the estuary of the River Medway early last winter. Seen Earlier Dr. James Harrison of Sevcnoaks, Kent, came across the bird, a redshank, in Mil fordhope Marsh. It was iden tifiable by its bright orange red legs which give it its name. But Dr. Harrison was surprised to see that the bird had its spring feathers - with chestnut tints and black streaks which are never normally seen until March or April, at the earliest. Dr. Harrison and his son, also a doctor and a keen stu dent of birds, were baffled until they read a report of similar out-of-season plumage on birds in Kenya. John Wil liams of Nairobi had found several birds with the "wrong" feathers. It was found that the birds discover ed in East .Africa had come from Russia. Mr. Williams thought that they might have flown through a radioactive cloud resulting from one of the Soviet Union's nuclear bomb tests. Found Another A month after their dis covery of the redshank, the Harrisons found another bird shot down In south-east Sussex which had its summer plum age In mid-winter. This, too, had probably come from northern Europe. The second, bird was sent to Dr. John Loutit, of the radio-biological research unit at the British Atomic Energy Authority's establishment at Harwell. He found that the bird was radioactive. The whole case was then given to the St. Bartholomew team, who have found that they can artificially change birds' feathers by submitting them to radiation.
