o O 12 C Migrane May Cause Dealh in Certain Cases London (Science Service)- Migraine may cause death under certain conditions. Dr, Erik Ask - Upmark, Royal University of Uppsala, Swe den, lists four conditions un der which death may result. 1. O p h thalmoplegic mi' graine (affecting the eyes) may be due to an aneurysm of an artery that may rup ture and be fatal. 2. Paroxysmal tachycardia (rapid heart action coming on and stooping) may De equiv. alent to migraine. It is apt to occur in families with ml graine, so that an individual mav have migraine at one time nd the heart condition at another. Most cases of par oxysmal tachycardia can be handled, but if no adequate assistance is given during a severe attack, the circulation may be blocked as in pul monary embolism. Heart May Stop 3. 8here are rare instances of migraine connected with bradycardia (slow heart), and If in such a case ergotamine tartrate is injected Into the veins, the heart may stop. Quick treatment with adren aline may counteract the symptoms. 4. An increasingly common complication Is in the kid neys, and can cause death by uremia (a toxic condition in which urine is in the blood). Dr. Ask-Upmark says the kidney complication may be caused by long dosage with phenacetin or by ergotamine tartrate for the relief of mi graine headaches. A fatal case was that of a 56-year-old" physician, who be cause of migraine since child hood had been taking reme dies containing mainly phe nacetin. He died of uremia. Gives Own Injections Seven others .who escaped death but had advanced ure mia were among those who had taken phenacetin. In ad dition, one woman had been taught by her physician to give herself Injections of er gotamine tartrate. Migraine may occur In from three to 30 per cent of the population, Dr. Ask-Upmark reports in the British Medi cal Journal, but usually Is not prolonged or dangerous in so large a percentage. It occurs more commonly in women than In men, so that if both sexes are considered and "only severe cases em blttering life for a number of years are included," three per cent may be more accurate. Animal experiments have failed to show proof that kid ney trouble Is caused by pne-nacetin. MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. ORE. WEDTTEY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1960 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD. Washington - (UFB - George V. Allen, head of the United Slates Information agency, report. ih increasing cold war tensions have failed to lessen the Russian people's interest in America. Allen, in the agency's 14th semiannual report to Con gress, said "the interest of the Russian people in things American continues unabated, regardless of the zigs and zags of the Soviet propaganda line." See U.S. Movie. Characterizing the Russian people's reaction as a "riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma," Allen said more Russians have seen American motion pictures during the last six months than in all the previous years since 1917 combined. He said nearly half of Mos cow's movie houses-45 out of 102-were showing American films on June 30 of this year. Allen said the "houses were packed with people, and the reaction was highly favorable at the very moment when official Soviet propa ganda attacks against the U.S. were at their worst." "To appreciate the para dox, he said, one must imag ine 42 of the principle movie houses in New York showing Soviet films, and continuing to do so week after week." Ruralite. Hear Radio In other developments, Al len said Soviet Jamming on United States broadcasts con cerning the U2 incident had resulted in almost no infor mation getting through to Russian people living in the big cities while those living in suburban and rural areas, "often were able to hear the broadcasts without interfer ence." He also reported the USIA was increasing as fast as pos- PLAN U.S. VISIT Stockholm - (DPI) - Swedish Princesses Brigitta, 23, and Desiree, 22, will make their first visit to the United States next November. Among the Improvements for the continent are new li braries, additional radio broadcasts beamed at Africa and better transmitting facili ties for these programs at Mu nich, Germany, he said. American Finds Use for Russian Discovered Resin I Communicates Holds Economic Expansion Key New York - (Science Serv ice) -It took an Airerican to find a commercial use for a Russian-discovered resin that has been sitting unused on the laboratory shelf ever since 1903, the Ame.ican Chemical Society learned here. The resin, formolite, was discovered by the Russian chemist Nastyukov. It is made from formaldehyde and an "aromatic" organic com pound, Dr. J. E. Goodrich, re search chemist with the Cali fornia Research Corporation, Richmond, Calif., reported. It is Dr. Goodrich who found the use for the Russian resin, soluble In ordinary solvents, By adding a dispersing agent to the resin, Dr. Good rich has produced resins with very small particle size and large surface area with many potential uses as thickeners in lubricating grease, lacquers, paints, varnishes, inks, putty and adhesives. Won't Melt Easily Nastyukov found that aro matic compounds react with formaldehyde at room temper ature in the presence of con centrated sulfuric acid to give yellow resins which will not melt easily and which are in- The advantage of the Amer ican-adapted Russian resin in lubricating greases, said Dr. Goodrich, is that the high temperature performance of the grease is not limited by the high melting point of the thickener. In fact, melting points of these resin-thickened greases are In excess of 500 degrees Fahrenheit, he said. Culottes, combining the ease of pants with the grace of skirts, gain fall fashion Importance in dresses, sports wear and lingerie. Cleveland, Ohio (Science Service) - Economic expan sion in the future will depend on better communication be tween science and industry, Dr. Clyde Williams, former president of Battelle Memo rial Institute and research ad ministrator, has predicted. He advocated a "mechan ized world science Information ' center" to best provide the "essential" communications link, at the dedication of the American Society for Metals new headquarters (Sept. 4). The "essential links" be tween science and industry now include newspapers, news magazines, as well as science and trade journals and techni cal Information centers, Dr. Williams said. However, the furtherance of technological developments on an economic scale "that will far surpass what we have seen in the past" will require the exten sion of present communica techniques and the creation of revolutionary new concepts. Would Provide Data A world science research center would provide through computers or other sypes of mechanical or electronic sys tems information needed by research scientists for their studies. From it, engineers and production men in indus try would be able to get data required for "their operation al, design, specification, and planning work." "This information would be processed, organized and integrated, and made readily available to the user by a system as simple, perhaps, as the use of the dial on his telephone, which would set in motion the retrieval and transmitting system," he said. Such a vast and effective world science information center still is far from realiza tion, Dr. Williams said. library Director Doesn't Hold Card Dallas - When Joseph A. Shirley applied for a library card he was asked to give the name of one citizen who al ready had a card. Shirley mentioned his long time friend, James Meeks, the city library director. Then the clerk went through the for mality of checking to see if Meeks held a carcV. He didn't. Heart Injury Possible Result Of Burn Shock Bethcsda, Md. -(Science Service) The dangerous period of burn shock during the first 24 to 48 hours following a severe burn may be caused by Injury lo the heart muscle. Shock is a principal cause of death following burns. Dr. Henry A. Fozzard of the Washington University School of Medicine In St. Louis, Mo., reported laboratory experi ments indicating this possi bility to the First Internation al Congress on Research in Burns here. Describing his experiments on 38 mongrel dogs, Dr. Foz- zard observed that cardiac output invariably falls pre cipitously following a severe burn. An explanation of the fall may be primary myo cardial (heart muscle) injury, he said. Tested Experimentally Dr. Fozzard followed up the hypothesis with treatment, be lieving that if injury to the heart muscle does occur, drugs such as digitalis would increase the force of the heart contraction. He tested various treatments experimentally. The dogs were separated Into small groups. One group was treated with digoxin (a type of digitalis). Another was treated by administration of Intravenous fluids. A third was treated both with fluids and digoxin. The experiment ers got best results when both fluids and digoxin were given immediately after the burn. Dr, Fozzard said that col lection of fluid in the lungs may be prevented by the use of digitalis for bum patients. Kennedy was 'stud ded with ineptitude and failures." In its lead editorial, the second edition of the GOP magazine said "There Is no evidence in the public domain or anywhere else that Jack Kennedy . . . can furnish even one lota of the type of experienced leadership re quired to safeguard the fu ture of 180,000,000 Ameri cans. The magazine contrasted its estimate of Kennedy with what it called the "experi enced and calm leadership" of the GOP candidate, Vice President Richard M. Nixon. 'It is a fact," the maga zine said, "that Kennedy's in experience has been empha sized again and again by his own Democratic colleagues" and quoted Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt to make the point. Ability To Learn "He (Kennedy) has the de sire to be a good public ser vant and he has the ability to lenrn," the magazine quot ed Mrs. Roosevelt as saying. The editorial then asked: "In this nuclear age where only tried and tested exper ience can cope with the evil whims of our Moscow adver saries do the American peo ple want a 'learner' in the White House?" Answering its own ques tion, the GOP magazine said "This is no time for voters to help satisfy an ambition which is bnsed upon qualifi cations which exist only in Kennedy's mind." It said the "debacle of the bob-tail session of Congress clearly stamps Jack Kennedy as a man who cannot even lead his own party" and "un masks the phony utopianism of the Democratic platform." Spectator Warns Shakespeare Player Lawrence, Kan. - The scene was tense Shakespeare. As Othello throttled Desde mona someone in the audience shouted, "Don't do It, Buddy, they'll send you to jail." - "You just don't know what to expect," said Dr. Lewin Goff in retrospect. His Uni versity of Kansas Players had presented scenes from "Othel lo," "Brigadoon" and "Tea home nf the Ausust Moon" to an audience of 900 Inmates at Leavenworth federal prison. The convicts cheered the villain in Othello and booed the hero - except when he strangled the heroine.
