Increasing numbers of lamp manufacturers are offering coordinated groups of lamps so that an entire room or series of rooms can be fur nished with lamps that go well together but are not Iden tical. This applies to both floor and table models. Such group ings are available in modern and traditional stylings to suit any decorating scheme. Since the primary purpose of a lamp is to give better lighting, many new advances in the "technical" design are being offered. There are more three-way switches, improved diffusers, swivel arrangements, and con trolled lighting devices for more convenience, better decor and better vision. Sectional Upholstered Furniture Is Flexible, Functional Every home maker looking for furniture that Is flexible, functional and handsome -looks first to the wide variety of sectional upholstered fur niture items. Yes, chief asset of the sec tionals Is their flexibility. The variety of possibilities in room arrangements gives wide play to the home makers proverb ial need for "changing things around," a practice enthusias tically supported by home planners who recognize the values of versatile living. Great Variety Possible Like a child's building blacks, sectionals may be stacked horizontally. Placed end to end they fill a wall or bend around a corner. Variety is gained thru use of curved pieces, which may serve as center focal points or be used to round out freight - train lengths of up to ten units ex tending up to 40 feet. The varsatility of sectionals is limited only by room size. Styles ranging from stark I modern to traditional, include the French provincial with its outline of carved wood mold ing in the Louis XV manner; hundreds of fabrics finding favor are brocatelles, linens, boucles and matelasse often combined with nylon, and fine metallic textures. For persons with a prefer ence for the traditional, manu facturers make wide use of damask and matelasse in the flavor of the old desiuns. Slim Arms and Backs The axiom among interior decorators that rroins must be fitted like clothing has given impetus to davenports and sectionals that are lighter in scale to dress contempor ary homes. These have slim mer arms and backs, or none at all. In any size room there is a place for sectional arrange ments. Fireplaces are right for sofa size units, and, where television seta have become family centers, curved corner pieces combining to seat half a dozen or more make com fortable and stylish living room theaters. Sections may hug one wall or extend the length of it and make a short right angle job MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. Wednesday, Apr. JO, I960 .9 at the corner. Instead of a small corner piece, the long section abutting the wall may have two arms, the other only one. Or a square, upholstered corner table unit with formica top may be used to make the turn. Fitted Waist Back In Season Style Spring 1960 will be one of the most important seasons in several years for foundations Women are more than ready to embrace the new styles which feature the return of the fitted waist . . . and in most cases, slim skirts too. And this of course means good foundations. One of the biggest items of news along this line is fabric, a special fabric called "Ly cra". It's a wonder stretch fabric which will be found to some degree in most every foundation garment. Here's a short summary of what to watch for in founda tions if you like to try new things: Trimmed With Lace The longline bra features newly dressed up midriffs . . . trimmed with lace, sheer or embroidery. Deft shaping of the midriff sections gives the bras a more slender look too. Elastic bras feature wings of elastic . . . and if they don't stretch with you, you are not wearing the newest. Select your bra with special care this year as fashion is emphasizing the top . . . with new and fuller sleeves and many new innovations on the neckline. There is a bra de signed for every major sil houette. If the waist is not control' led by a cinch or a longline bra, it is of couse up to the girdle to take care of this moulding job. Girdles will do a good job i " i Iff L -iai-a- ISsiWaa'i:J ROOMY BAG-Fashion is on hand in creating this roomy straw and cowhide bag. The all-in-one is, as always, the best bet for complete and proper figure-pontrol . . and this Spring they are easier than ever to wear. Long panties are still to be popular . . . with capris, for young figures, or whenever the firmer girdle is not need ed. Color variety will be great er tills Spring too . . . with just about any color you could want for matching to other lingerie. Sleeves Make Big News in Today's Fashion Parade Dame Fashion has a world of surprises "up her sleeves" - and the big news is in the sleeve. Foremost are the Oriental inspired sleeve silhouettes such as the kimono sleeves which start from deep - cut armholes or dropped should ers and then flare into full ness at the elbow where they are cropped sliortj Dome sleeves . . . fluted sleeves, puffed or funneled sleeves are all newsmakers and appear variously on coats, suits, dresses and sports wear. Many designers give the Near East touch to their sleeve ' fashions with such nomenclature as "minaret" . , . "lantern" "pagoda" . . . 'mandarin" o r "burnoose" sleeves. Each of these is basic ally a kimona type sleeve. Spring's variations on Dol man sleeve themes - are deep. draped and full. Many of these rise from high-wrapped mid-riffs . . . others are slash ed from shoulder to elbow . , still others just "fold" from the shoulder Into a softly draped frame for the arm. New on the American fash ion scene are suits with short sleeves. These are usually chopped at the elbowl (Of course there will be many traditional length and full length sleeves, too) - but the to-the-elbow sleeve Is newest.
