Smarter, taller and more
imaginatively lamps are
everywhere on the Spring
Furniture Fashion scene!
Even the smaller, budget
priced lamps show the styling
trend. Some are delicate and
airy looking, with black wire
frames in amusing and grace
ful shapes; others are solid
and substantial.
In many there is a swing
away from shiny pottery glaz
es to soft, muted, matt fin
ishes in all the wanted dec
orator colors, including a
number of pastels.
General Trend
In line with the general
trend of home furnishings,
there is lots of black or black
and white and lots of brass.
Pastels of all kinds are
everywhere! as in both home
furnishings and apparel fash
ions. Ceramic bases are gaining
new favor, while wood, metal,
glass, and combinations are
widely seen.
Shades too are more inter

ments. Fireplaces are right
for sofa size units, and, where
television seta have become
family centers, curved corner
pieces combining to seat half
a dozen or more make com
fortable and stylish living
room theaters.

or extend the length of it and
make a short right angle job

small corner piece, the long
section abutting the wall may
have two arms, the other only
one. Or a square, upholstered
corner table unit with formica
top may be used to make the

Fitted Waist Back
In Season Style
Spring 1960 will be one of
the most important seasons in
several years for foundations
Women are more than ready
to embrace the new styles
which feature the return of
the fitted waist . . . and in
most cases, slim skirts too.
And this of course means
good foundations.
One of the biggest items of
news along this line is fabric,
a special fabric called "Ly
cra". It's a wonder stretch
fabric which will be found to
some degree in most every
foundation garment.
Here's a short summary of
what to watch for in founda
tions if you like to try new
things:
Trimmed With Lace
The longline bra features
newly dressed up midriffs . . .
trimmed with lace, sheer or
embroidery. Deft shaping of
the midriff sections gives the
bras a more slender look too.
Elastic bras feature wings
of elastic . . . and if they don't
stretch with you, you are not
wearing the newest.
Select your bra with special
care this year as fashion is
emphasizing the top . . . with
new and fuller sleeves and
many new innovations on the
neckline. There is a bra de
signed for every major sil
houette.
If the waist is not control'
led by a cinch or a longline
bra, it is of couse up to the
girdle to take care of this
moulding job.

News in Today's
Fashion Parade

Foremost are the Oriental
inspired sleeve silhouettes
such as the kimono sleeves
which start from deep - cut
armholes or dropped should

ness at the elbow where they

Dome sleeves . . . fluted
sleeves, puffed or funneled
sleeves are all newsmakers
and appear variously on coats,
suits, dresses and sports
wear.
Many designers give the
Near East touch to their
sleeve ' fashions with such
nomenclature as "minaret" .
, . "lantern" "pagoda" . . .
'mandarin" o r "burnoose"
sleeves. Each of these is basic
ally a kimona type sleeve.
Spring's variations on Dol
man sleeve themes - are deep.
draped and full. Many of
these rise from high-wrapped
mid-riffs . . . others are slash
ed from shoulder to elbow . ,
still others just "fold" from
the shoulder Into a softly
draped frame for the arm.
New on the American fash
ion scene are suits with short
sleeves. These are usually
chopped at the elbowl (Of
course there will be many
traditional length and full
length sleeves, too) - but the
to-the-elbow sleeve Is newest.
