A Thursday, April 14, l68 Advertising to Sell Drugs Compared to Automobile Ads Washington - IlIPI) - Senate investigators were told today that some companies use the same advertising techniques to peddle new drugs to phy sicians that are used to sell hew automobiles to the gen eral public. Dr. Chauncey D. Leake of the Ohio State University Medical School said drug prices could be reduced if manufacturers toned down ad vertising and promotional campaigns. ' He said drug advertisers "seem to thing that physicians are simpletons and that they may be persuaded to use new drugs in the same way that people generally are porsuad lo buy new clothes and new automobiles." Leake also recommended that every new drug be tested first on healthy adult humans - "preferably by those advo cating the new drug" - before it used on sitk people. Minimum Wage: A House labor subcommittee planned to hear Labor ' Secretary James P. Mitchell next week on controversial proposals to raise the minimum wage from $1 to $1.25 and expand cover age to an additional 7,500,000 workers. Organized labor has backed the proposals. Com merce Secretary Frederick H. Mueller Wednesday opposed the $1.25 figure as "inflation ary." Mueller favored only extending coverage. Wall Street Chatter New York-(UPD-A report on the aluminum industry by Thomsom & McKinnon asks it the metal can -continue its steeply rising growth curve of tHe past 20 years. ' The industry's management evidently thinks so, It points out, because nowhere can the investor find more positive capital spending plans of such a magnitude as to impress the most skeptical. The stock market has taken a rather dim view of alumi num as a growth Industry recently and these stocks are hovering around the 1959-60 lows, probably because of the well publicized near term overcapacity. But past experience shows, Thomson & McKinnon says, that the time to buy proven growth equities is precisely when such pessimism is most prevalent. It recommends an other hard look.
