Advertising to Sell Drugs
Compared to Automobile Ads
Washington - IlIPI) - Senate
investigators were told today
that some companies use the
same advertising techniques
to peddle new drugs to phy
sicians that are used to sell
hew automobiles to the gen
eral public.
Dr. Chauncey D. Leake of
the Ohio State University
Medical School said drug
prices could be reduced if
manufacturers toned down ad
vertising and promotional
campaigns. '
He said drug advertisers
"seem to thing that physicians
are simpletons and that they
may be persuaded to use new
drugs in the same way that
people generally are porsuad
lo buy new clothes and new
automobiles."

For ' the first time, Negro
and Asiatic priests were in
cluded in the traditional Holy
Thursday -ceremony In the
Pope's own basilica, St .John's
in Latcran.
The Pope's choice of Afri
can priests at a time of racial
strife in South Africa and the
United States appeared to be
a protest against intolerance,
which the Pontiff often has
condemned in sermons. It fol
lowed his naming of the first
Negro, Filipino, and Japanese
cardinals in modern Roman
Catholic history. '
The pre-Enslcr ceremony Is
as old ns Christianity itself.
The rite commemorates
Christ's own act of humility
in washing the feet of 12 dis
ciples of the eve of his cruci
Popes have performed the
ceremony through the centu
ries with 13 men taking part,
although there were only 12
apostles of Christ.
The extra man was added
by a 6th Century pope, St.
Gregory the Great, who dis
covered a 13th pair of feet
among those he was washing.

He washed them without
question, and, according to
church tradition, learned in
vision. that they were the feet
of Christ himself.

Drug companies should pro
vide more "helpful" informa
tion, he said, rather than con
centrating on what he termed
"persuasive, exaggerated ad
vertisements, concealing for

really essential for physicians
to know."
Leake also recommended
that every new drug be tested
first on healthy adult humans
- "preferably by those advo
cating the new drug" - before
it used on sitk people.

the aluminum industry by
Thomsom & McKinnon asks
it the metal can -continue its
steeply rising growth curve
of tHe past 20 years. '
The industry's management
evidently thinks so, It points
out, because nowhere can the
investor find more positive
capital spending plans of such
a magnitude as to impress the
most skeptical.
The stock market has taken
a rather dim view of alumi
num as a growth Industry
recently and these stocks are
hovering around the 1959-60
lows, probably because of the
well publicized near term
overcapacity.
But past experience shows,
Thomson & McKinnon says,
that the time to buy proven
growth equities is precisely
when such pessimism is most
prevalent. It recommends an
other hard look.

Bache At Co.' the latest to
climb' oh' the bandwagon.
Bnche points out that the com

improved position, is selling
at about 13 times' estimated
