MAIL TRIBUNI, Madiera1, Or. Thuradiy, April 14, 1960 A PIGGLY VIGGLY PIGGLY WIGGLY In the Days News By FRANK JENKINS UlAMI1 Imnfii Vir- From Charlottesville gima: Adlal Stevenson, despite his denials, looks a good deal like someone running tor Presi dent. He Insisted in New York he is not a candidate for the Democratic nomination, does not expect to get it and has no hopes that he will be chosen. But here in Charlottesville he is flashing his best smile, shaking a lot of hands and preparing to take a slap at the Republicans. Officially, he is here to be the featured speaker at the commemoration of the found ing of the University of Vir ginia by Thomas Jefferson, whose 217th birthday is also being celebrated. In this, his first speech since his return from South America, he will reflect on the PARTY IDEALS OF JEFFERSON, tear into the GOP and call for a Democratic victory in November. HMMMMMM. One can't help wondering if Adlai approves Jefferson's belief that THAT GOVERN MENT IS BEST WHICH GOVERNS LEAST and will pledge himself to carry it out if he is nominated and elected President. If so, I might be tempted to vote for him. MORE about politics: In this campaign year most of the candidates pres ently looming on the horizon appear to be pretty well heeled. SENATOR Kennedy, who at the moment looks like the Democratic front runner, mod estly admits that he is worth about a million, maybe only $900,000. At least, his father eave him a million dollar trust fund when he was only nine years old. Senator Lyndon Johnson rates his financial condition as "average." He thinks if he sold out today he could cash in fn sivtiinri 9ftfl nftfi Rut his wife is worth quite a lot more-maybe as mucn as i million. fipnntnr Stuart Svmineton who can't be laughed off as a candidate for the Democratic nomination, regards himself as nnmfnrtahlv fixed. When he first went into government, he sold out nis noiaings in one nnnnofn that miffht have been a contender for government contracts for a million dol lare. Mrs. Symington is inde pendently wealthy. She and her husband have pooled their holdings in a trust. - On the Republican side, only Nelson Rockefeller shar es mention as a Presidential nncehMitv with Mr. Nixon He certainly will never need to worry about where his next meal will come trom. Mr. Stevenson, who says he doesn't expect to get I third nomination, but appears liU Barkis, to "be willin', is estimated by his friends to be worth about a hail minion. ing hopefuls, that leaves only Vice-President Nixon ana Senator Humphrey in the ..laoo nf mnderatelv Door folks Mr Nixon started with nothing and worked his way s through college. After 13 v9M nf nuhlic life, he has a S35.000 equity in a $75,000 ho, ico a 1955 ear. some term insurance and some savings arrniintj! and no stocks or hnnHs. Mr. Humphrey estimates 1th as "about that of the average for a small town druggist." He has in tne neign sfi.000 in savinKs. maybe $4,000 in mutual se curities and owns a paid-for home in Washington but owes $17,000 on his home in Minne sota. i T.I. in all. it looks like the A log cabin tradition, which was a long-time must in our politics, is on its way out.
