C. B. Stcphen-sen, president of the 82-o f f i c e statewide banking system, said the order was placed with International Business Machines Corpora tion. He said it would be the first large scale magnetic tape computer installation in a Pa cific Northwest bank. The system will be installed by the end of 1961. Stephensen said the bank was turning to the electronic equipment to keep pace with increasing volume of checks and to cope with the time-consuming task of book keeping. Although numbered com mercial accounts will be used throughout the statewide sys tem, complete conversion to electronic data processing, which performs many book keeping functions now done manually, will be confined to the bank's ofices in the Port land Metropolitan area, Ste phensen said.
