Quick Dip For Blue Holiday Decorations If you want a blue-note for Christmas, paint tree branch tips' and faded orna ments with a bluing mixture. To make it, put a cup of bead bluing in a small bowl. Add a quarter cup of cold water. Beat to a creamy consistency. Use a paint brush to blue the tree. Asfor faded orna ments, dip them right into the mixture and they'll come out good as new. Top ped with a star and glittering with lights and ornaments, it is a part of the beauty and meaning of the Christmas sea son. How did the Christmas tree come to play such an impor tant part in the observance of Christmas? Greenery was brought into the home to provide a haven for friendly spirits, so. that they might share in the feast of the winter solistice. Even after the pagan signi ficance was forgotten this cus tom survived among a people who loved the color and frag rance of fresh greenery. Legend traces the first lighted tree to Martin Luther, who used lights and decora tions to reproduce the beauty of evergreen as seen on a snowy Christmas night. The custom was imported into this country, arid the first record of the use of Christmas trees in America, was by Hessian soldiers, who came from Germany in 1776, during the American revolution. In 1804 a Christmas tree was mentioned as part of the celebration at Fort Dearborn, where Chicago now stands. Slowly, over objections, the custom was assimilated and became part of the American Christmas in the latter part of the 19th century. Today, as jolly old St. Nick comes sliding down the chim ney, he more than likely finds himself in a room with a gaily decorated Christmas tree as tall as the ceiling will allow.
