Matched Luggage Is Useful Holiday Gift For a gift both useful and beautiful, there's nothing like a set of matched luggage. Fashion-wise, today's line up of suitcases offers a wider choice of shapes and covering than ever before. Budget-wise, almost every one can a'fford to give at least one piece as a "starter," or an other as an accessory case to a set already in use. Basic Set Three pieces constitute a basic set for a girl or woman, including a train case for cos metics, a week-ender or over night bag, and a wardrobe case for hanging garments. To these, or as a substitute may be added the large square hat and shoe case, or a pullman for flat packing. Fre quently, round hatboxes (which may double as over night bags), may be had to match other pieces of luggage. For a man, a two-suiter and companion bag are the all "round favorites to begin a luggage wardrobe. The latter will serve either as an auxil iary piece for longer trips, or as a week-ender on a few days' journey. Other Luggage Other luggage which might be a fine choice for the trav eler already equipped with a complement of suitcases falls into the accessory class, such as the traveling garment bag, designed for motor trips but useable anywhere or the varied shaped zipper and duf fle bags suitable for shoes, in cidentals, the beach, laundry or last-minute packing. To choose luggage properly, consider the use to which it will be put; check the styling for ease of carrying and hand ling, the locks if burglary is a factor. Select colors for fashion and personal prefer ence, and add a set of luggage tags for permanent identification. Rubber rings from canning jars make a good base from which to make festive, minia ture wreaths. 'Pocket Fillers' Listed by Jewelry Council for Men At Christmas time, when everything seems to be going out of a man's pockets, it's a good idea to give him some thing special to put back into them. The Jewelry Industry coun cil suggests a list of "pocket fillers' that the Santa Claus in any family is sure to appre ciate and use for a long while. A gold-filled pen and pen cil set, handsomely and sleek ly designed, is a moderately priced gift that a man will use with pride. If he is a smoker, a slim cigarette case in sterl ing or silver plate will do away forever with crumpled cigarette packs and tobacco filled pockets. A good com panion gift is a new lighter. Money Clip Coming under the heading of accessories a man rarely buys for himself but he would enjoy owning - is the money clip, v No longer merely an over sized paper clip, modern mon ey clips are carefully design ed to be as interesting to look at as they are functional. In the proper shape and weight, not too heavy or too light, there are many with classic design motifs and others in spired by pure whimsy. New wallets or billfolds al so make thoughtful gifts, par ticularly if they are personal ized with a man's own initials in gold. Pocket-Fillers One of the most necessary of all pocket-fillers is the key chain. Long, medium or short, the variety of chain designs, and watch chains as well, is wide. A charm strictly sen timental - is a nice addition to either one. Leather always makes a su perb and welcomed present to give the male members of your family. How about gifting him with a soft supple suede or leather jacket? Then there are leath er gloves, leather wallets, key cases ,and very handsome desk accessories for his office. If Pop doesn't have an elec tric razor give him one for Christmas. Christmas Clubs for Easy Savings Plan Christmas will start early for over thirteen million Am ericans this year . . . when they receive the check from their Christmas club savings. Christmas club, for those not familiar with the term, is a formalized savings plan whereby the depositor com mits himself to 50 equal pay ments and is rewarded a year later by the receipt, between Nov. 4 and Dec. 2, of a pre dictable amount of cash. Usu ally it is exactly the amount put in. , . Some financial institutions, offering this type of savings program, , however, pay inter est, some charge penalties if the saver falls short of his goal, and others merely guard the funds. The Christmas club method of thrift originated, not sur prisingly, in Scotland. The Frugality Banks of that coun try first set up special ac counts of this type in 1798. The idea didn't penetrate the New World until after the Civil war when it began as a paternalistic a r rangement, with employers rather than the f i n a ncial institutions themselves "accepting" week ly deposits for repayment at Christmas time. Soon the institutions saw there was a place for them in this scheme, , and by 1914 there were some 3,600 banks which had Christmas club savings plans. Actually, only about a third of the savings will be spent on' holiday gifts and such. An other third will go back as permanent savings and most of the remainder will go into payments for taxes, mortgage payments, year-end bills. The average Christmas club saver is more than pleased with the method and is de lighted that at least one regu lar payment isn't going to a creditor. For tall trees, not symmet rical, hang strings in straight vertical lines. Recommended for short, too-stocky trees too. For Other Sports The golfer and bowler fall into easy-to-please categories. New clubs, golf balls, or a golf cart or bag will- please the former. Well, here in America there is no doubt in any child's mind that Santa is a '"good guy." But, if children in most other lands were used to judg ing all people as either "good guys" or "bad guys" ... as do so many American chil dren . . . they would have a pretty hard time deciding about Santa Claus! For instance, in Germany, Sankt Nickolaus may arrive on December 6 with a basket of cookies and fruit, in addi tion to the Christmas Eve vis it from Kriss Kringle, who is ! the Christ Child himself. Or, on December 6, Belsnickle, a furred Nikolaus may bring swithes instead. Other European children also believe in this Jekyll Hyde nature of old Saint Nick. Accompanied Dutch tykes may find that their Saint Nicholas was ac companied by Black Peter, a moorish dwarf who beats them with birch rods. Naugh ty little Czechoslovaks know that the black-hooded devil Cert, whip in hand, may visit them on Christmas. And, Hun garian tots remain good with thought of the devil Kramp- usz. Actually, in each country there is a "good" Santa though . . . but he may have a "bad" alter ego or helper. In our country, however, even Santa's helpers, the elves, are nice. The only threat of an un merry Christmas to Ameri can children is the thought of no gifts . . . but, somehow, they are always there on Christmas morn!
