Red Raiders Engage bounties In Homecoming Football Fray Ashland Preparation for Homecoming festivities have become more involved at Southern Oregon college as this week progresses and the Raider football squad has spent-plenty of its time on the field polishing for its share of the celebration. Southern Oregon gridders oppose Eastern Oregon at 2 'p.m. on Saturday on Fuller field In the Homecoming hassle. v New offense of the Raiders has continued to be the topic of conversation and concentra tion off the gridiron and on. It's the main problem on the practice area. Mistakes of last week's Seattle Rambler skirmish are being corrected and left formation plays are being Inserted into the wing T along with those set up for the right. The whole Ashlander aggre gation appears in near top shape for the Mountaineer en counter. SOC has been pro nounced in its best physical condition of the fall. Only Al South is sidelined because of injury. Del Brood has been the top running back' in the Raider camp this week. He will team with Laval Meunier at half- beck against EOC. Terry Mau rer is billed for fullback du- j ties. Lance Locke s running . ability is expected to give him starting nod at quarterback. 'Knack of running with the ball, as well as heaving it, is needed to make the wing T go. Coach Al Akins has indicat ed that Jim McAbee and Larry Yarnell will start at ends. Al Sodaro and Bud Brittsan may be at tackles and Jim Tacchini and Troy Bellah at guards with 1957 all-conference choice Phil Sword, at center. All the seniors will be team captains for the Homecoming event. There are five, Maurer, Yarnell, Marion Jack, Don Dickson and John Godlove. In the event the Raiders pull off the Homecoming win it will give them a 3-5 record on the season and make them break even in Oregon Collegi ate conference play with a 2-2 record. The collegiate and the mili tary service elevens will pre sent the first such competi tion here in more . than two years. Southern Oregon last appeared on the Tornado grass in September 1956. So far as can be learned the Fliers will be the first service team to play at the stadium. Moffett has compiled, a 6-1 record for the season, includ ing a 40 to 25 triumph over the SOC Red Raiders. Only Flier loss has been to San Quentin prison. The service team from down below San Francisco will come to Med ford after playing Oregon Technical institute at Klam ath Falls. OTI whipped the Raiders of SOC 40 to 0. Campbell Stars A 170-pound halfback, Cal vin Campbell, is the main ball carrier for Moffett field. He has been picked to all-Navy and all-service teams. To the Raiders and the fans who saw the previous SOC-Moffett con test, Campbell needs no in troduction. For those who haven't seen him play,' the record speaks. He has scored 23 touchdowns and 10 two point conversions in seven games. That the Red Raiders want a triumph over the Fliers is no secret and, with the sting of the early defeat still felt, Southern Oregon reportedly has welcomed this second chance. The flankman will be in action when the Raider gridders face Eastern Oregon at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Homecoming game at Fuller field in Ashland. McAbee is also a letterman in basketball and baseball and was a three sport star also while in Talent High school.
