    Red Raiders Engage bounties
In Homecoming Football Fray
Ashland Preparation for
Homecoming festivities have
become more involved at
Southern Oregon college as
this week progresses and the
Raider football squad has
spent-plenty of its time on
the field polishing for its
share of the celebration.

New offense of the Raiders
has continued to be the topic
of conversation and concentra
tion off the gridiron and on.
It's the main problem on the
practice area. Mistakes of last
week's Seattle Rambler
skirmish are being corrected
and left formation plays are
being Inserted into the wing
T along with those set up for
the right.
The whole Ashlander aggre
gation appears in near top
shape for the Mountaineer en
counter. SOC has been pro
nounced in its best physical
condition of the fall. Only Al
South is sidelined because of
injury.
Del Brood has been the top
running back' in the Raider
camp this week. He will team
with Laval Meunier at half-
beck against EOC. Terry Mau
rer is billed for fullback du-
j ties. Lance Locke s running
. ability is expected to give him
starting nod at quarterback.
'Knack of running with the
ball, as well as heaving it, is
needed to make the wing T
go.
Coach Al Akins has indicat
ed that Jim McAbee and
Larry Yarnell will start at
ends. Al Sodaro and Bud
Brittsan may be at tackles and
Jim Tacchini and Troy Bellah
at guards with 1957 all-conference
choice Phil Sword, at
center.
All the seniors will be team
captains for the Homecoming
event. There are five, Maurer,
Yarnell, Marion Jack, Don
Dickson and John Godlove.
In the event the Raiders
pull off the Homecoming win
it will give them a 3-5 record
on the season and make them
break even in Oregon Collegi

2-2 record. This would also

occasion on the Medford turf.
The collegiate and the mili
tary service elevens will pre
sent the first such competi
tion here in more . than two
years. Southern Oregon last
appeared on the Tornado
grass in September 1956. So
far as can be learned the
Fliers will be the first service
team to play at the stadium.
Moffett has compiled, a 6-1
record for the season, includ
ing a 40 to 25 triumph over
the SOC Red Raiders. Only
Flier loss has been to San
Quentin prison. The service
team from down below San
Francisco will come to Med
ford after playing Oregon
Technical institute at Klam
ath Falls. OTI whipped the
Raiders of SOC 40 to 0.
Campbell Stars
A 170-pound halfback, Cal
vin Campbell, is the main ball
carrier for Moffett field. He
has been picked to all-Navy
and all-service teams. To the
Raiders and the fans who saw
the previous SOC-Moffett con
test, Campbell needs no in
troduction. For those who
haven't seen him play,' the
record speaks. He has scored
23 touchdowns and 10 two
point conversions in seven
games.
That the Red Raiders want
a triumph over the Fliers is
no secret and, with the sting
of the early defeat still felt,
Southern Oregon reportedly
has welcomed this second
chance.

RAIDER RECEIVER-Jim McAbee, above, has been an able
pass receiver this fall for the throws of Southern Oregon col
lege quarterbacks. The flankman will be in action when the
Raider gridders face Eastern Oregon at 2 p.m. Saturday in
the Homecoming game at Fuller field in Ashland. McAbee is
also a letterman in basketball and baseball and was a three
sport star also while in Talent High school. He'll also per
form next Tuesday at the Medford stadium when the Red
Raiders meet Moffett Naval Air field.
